Is it possible to bore sight a muzzle loader
« on: August 21, 2004, 07:19:06 PM »
Hello All:

I have an inline muzzle loader.............I am putting a scope of it.......and wonder if it would be possible for a gunsmith to do that for me.

Thanks for the help.

It's possible to do it yourself if you can look thru the bore from the breech end. I remove the breech plug and place the rifle in a vise. Look the the bore and line it up on a distant object that you can center in the bore.  At night, a light in the distance works, or during the day, an orange laying in the lawn. Once the object is centered in the view thru the bore, adjust the reticle so it is centered on the object. Have done many rifles this way, both muzzleloader and breech loaders. This is good enough to be on the paper at 25-50yds, sometimes even at 100yds!

Quickdtoo is right. Remove the striker then remove the nipple, and you should be able to bore sight it with no problem. I prefere something like a basketball @ about 75 yds.

You can do it either way. By looking through the bore or install a bore sighting tool in the muzzle and bore sight it. I have a lazar bore sighter and a Leupold magnetic bore sighter I use. I have never had a need for a gunsmith to bore sight a gun for me. Plus it is fun doing it by yourself.  :D

I have bore sighted a couple recently with my Cabelas laser bore sight.  It shot several inches low on both of them, but the windage was good and it was on paper.  So many clicks "up" and we were in business.

how do you guys like the  lazar bore sighters?

I have a bushnell bore sighter with arbor for muzzle loading and shotguns. It works great for high power scopes but I find it almost useless for my low power handgun scopes and iron sights.

I think my lazar bore sighter is great. I use both my lazar and magnetic bore sighter. I usually do not have to make any changes, but it is nice to do both. Just to cross check each other. :-D

Cheap laser bore sighting

Here's what worked for me. I have a laser pen light that fits thru the striker hole and is concaved on the end. It fit's over the nipple. Put the gun in a vise, shine it on the wall or some thing you can see and move the scope accordingly. It gets me on paper, and is cheaper to.

Or, you can just take it to the range and set a large target at 20 or 25 yards and plant one on it.  Make your adjustments so you are hitting about 1 inch low at 25 and then try 100.  You will be pretty close to a dead on sight in.

The other method that requires very few shots is to plant one on the target at 25 yards and if you can lock the rifle in a rest so it does not move set the crosshair on the center of the target (assuming that is where you had them when you made the shot) then without letting the rifle move make adjustments in the scope until the crosshair is on the bullet hole. You are now very close and only need to adjust for range.
