Howie, picked up another hog gun
« on: August 22, 2004, 05:28:50 PM »
Howie i picked up another marlin GS 45-70 with peep sights and a hi-viss
front sight. It had six rounds through it, The old man sait it kicked all the stuffing out of him, So i traded him a 300win mag for it. Took it out yesterday and was tickled at the way it shot. I really needed another 45-70, ( you know a man can't have too many 45-70s) Take care pard. and stay safe.........Joe...........

300 win mag

He traded a 45-70 because of recoil for a 300 win mag?  Hummm...seems to me he didn't do to well in the trade if recoil was the issue.

Good luck with the new gun!  That rifle is also on my wish list.

Fortress49,
Matt, The 300 win mag i traded him was a1903-a3 with a heavy walnut stock and a pachmyr cushy pad on it and it felt about like a mild 30-06.
This all took place in Reserve NM which is out in the country, So i told the old man to take it out and shoot it to see if he could handle the recoil, Well
he did and liked it very much. Let me add this bit of observation,, THERE IS NO comparison between a light short barreled 45-70 and a heavy long
barreled 300 win. mag. I am not the type to trade an old man a gun he couldent handle just for the sake of making a trade. Have a good day Matt

That explains it.  Those old style rifles tend to be heavy.  Plus, those recoil pads sure do work.  I shoot an NEF 45/70 which is a light gun like the guide gun.  It packs a bit of a wallop but not to bad for me.  I just put a limbsaver recoil pad on mine but have not had a chance to shoot it since I did that. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of difference it will make.  People who have used them swear by them.

Good luck with your new rifle!

Matt
