« on: August 23, 2004, 05:37:01 AM »
Is my 6.5x55 a good choice for hunting black bear? This is my first time hunting black bear, I have dropped many white tails whith this gun and have never had to track more than 50yds.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

jasonmk,

First Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors!  The best forum on the net for hunters/shooters going today.  As for the 6.5x55, my wife has used hers to take two so far.  First one required a second shot but as it moved just as she fired.  The other didn't travel 20 yards.  I see no reason not to use the old Swede, it's worked on moose for years for the Swedes.  Lawdog

I have not hunted black bear with a 6.5 Swede, but having seen what a 140 grain NoslerPT does to deer I would recommend it for black bear.

As the others said...use it with the same confidenceas on your deer! Black bear are not that tough and the swede has killed many a moose. A friends wife has taken a moose a year for 15 or so with the swede and has little problems.

Let us know how things turn out afterward...size of bear, etc.

best,
bhtr

I have re-done M96 and it is a very good shooter with 129 and 140 grain bullets.  And that is with a cheap scope.

Here's a couple articles that might interest you.  Just remember, that  Trophy size Black Bear you hope to find is gonna' be around 500lbs and that usually means a big Boar.  These big guys are tough and mean.     Shot placement is critical, and nothing less than a premium bullet in a max load should be considered.   I would personally want something with more power for bear - at least a HEAVY 30-06 for an animal that can kill & eat me.  :?
