NMH91 Chi-com AK.....
« on: August 23, 2004, 06:53:55 AM »
Well I went back to Cabela's and bought the NMH91 for $325 out the door...I have no pic now but this one could be its twin:

(The one in the pic is $475 WITHOUT shipping, guess I did pretty good) [8D]

Can anyone tell me what type wood that is so I can find a regular stock and grip that will match the handguards?

I stopped by the gunsmith and had the bi-pod taken off...just had to drift a pin out and it came off.

It has a muzzle nut over the end of the barrel with an oversized pin holding it in....I believe the barrel is theaded underneath... 8)

I dont think you will find a matching wood ,, better figure on getting a whole set..  at least you have a square cut reciever so most any european
stock sets will work ,, may have to trim a little on the wood..

Nice Rifle you will be happy with it !!

NRAJOE:  got one.  Had it since '92.  First thing I did was to get a regular set of AK furniture and got rid of that horrible thumb hole stock and that incredibly fat handguard set-up.  Now she is nice and trim.  The barrel is threaded underneath the muzzle nut and you can install an AK flash hider or muzzle brake for both added looks and better accuracy - it helped with mine.  Yes, good idea to get rid of the tripod assembly -it does nothing for accuracy.

Most often you may find the wood to be Chinese Maple - if you get a mismatched set of wood, the finish comes off easily and she will take a nice stain to make it consistent.  Also, when you get your new wood you will find that the wood to metal fit is not all that great and some woodworking may be in order to get a nice fit.

Once you have dealth with your furniture you will find the NHM-91 to be a decent woods rifle.  I prefer Sellier and Bellot soft points in mine - actually, the rifle prefers them and will group under 2" at 100 yds with that ammo.  It also works well on whitetail and I have taken two at moderate ranges (under 100 yds)  with that ammo.

Please don't bother with any scope mounts - they are just not stable on that stamped receiver and I can shoot and group better without one.  HTH.  Mikey.

Barrel nut question
« Reply #7 on: December 24, 2004, 09:39:13 PM »
What hand thread is the barrel nut?  I've tried to remove mine with moderate effort, but I am afraid to try harder for fear that it is LH.
Any idea what the thread pattern is?  I've seen M14x1 LH muzzle breaks advertized, which is what gave me the doubts.
I guess I was lucky- the pin holding the bipod fell out of mine within a month of buying it.

Garthag:  the barrel thread on the Ak is 14x1 LH.  My front sight has a spring pin that hold the end cap in place.  Have to depress that to unscrew the muzzle cap.  HTH.  Mikey.
