Best scope mount for Bisley?
« on: August 23, 2004, 12:39:18 PM »
I just got a Ruger Bisley stainless with 5.5" barrel in 45 colt. Due to an eye problem open sights are very hard to use and I was thinking of mounting an ultra dot. What is the best mount for a Bisley if there is one?

weiland (sp) , It requires drilling and tapping the top strap but is a very secure mount . I tried the one that clamps to the barrel and uses the screw hole for the sights but I could not keep it from moving around .

Howd'y:
I have a Weaver Mount coming in the mail tomarrow.
It is the one that uses the screw from the rear sight and clamps to the barrel. I will let you know how it works.
I did not want to drill and tap but if it does't do the job I will get mine drilled and tapped.

I have an old B-Square non-gunsmithing mount that I can put on my .44.  It uses a 1" scope only.  The Leupold mx2 works good for this application.  Good for checking loads or reloads.  Would not be best for hunting situations.  If you are going to hunt, best to spend the $$ and get a good mount that needs smith to install.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

What are you planning on using for loads?  Asking because I'd doubt the mounts that simply use the rear sight hole and the bbl clamp would hold up to the heavier loads very long.   I have a Redfield mount mounted to the topstrap of one of my Blackhawk (drilled & tapped) and find it very secure.  I'd just hate to see one of those stainless Bisley's get drilled.
Maybe as another option you could look into the ghost ring sights that are available for Ruger SA's.  I've never seen them but have heard about them.

Since you're in ME, you going to the Augusta show this weekend?

BlkHawk73,
I think I will try some different open sight options before I drill anything like you suggested. I plan to load up some 300 gr cast bullets. I would like to try an express style or maybe the ghost ring sight.

I am fishing in a shark tournament this weekend so won't make the Augusta show.

Leupold drill and tap

When I wanted to scope my 41 mag Ruger Bisley, Wild West Guns of Anchorage was pretty insistent that a Leupold drill and tap mount would be the best.  So I went with it and it has been secure for at least 1,000 heavy loads (I've lost track).  Its a lot more sleek than some of the non-smithing options.

Then fired about 10 Hot 180gr. FMJ
Then fired some more Low dose 240 SWC
POI never changed.
Mount never moved and no screws loosened.

I once scoped a SBH in the hopes that it would cure a shooting problem. Put a nice 2x7 Burris scope on a Ruger MKII Govn't Target Pistol, too, thought it would help make hitting easier. Scopes will not do that; if anything, they will magnify a problem you are having with technique. Old eyes suck........One thing that helps is concentrate on the front sight; the back sight can be fuzzy and that won't hurt a thing. I'm going to try a One Ragged Hole ghost ring one of these days. I've been hearing good things about them. I guess I'm not a fan of scopes on handguns anymore.

Went to the range again and I have no complaints.
Fired about another 50 rd. of 240gr. win. loads and hot hand loads.
No movement.
I don't think I'll be drilling and tapping.
