Where can I get a 7x30 barrel for my Marlin 336 without sending it off to be installed? Anybody have any outlets?

Hello. I'm assuming it is a 30-30 now. I have a VERY good smith here now, he worked for Colt and Hi standard back in the 70's. I will be talking to him soon and I can ask him for you if you like. I think I know what he is going to say tho. He will likely ask, what do you hope to gain?

I would appreciate you asking him for me. What I hope to gain is a Marlin 336 chambered in one of the finest woods calibers available.  I know that caliber opinions are like belly buttons...........everybody has one.  Marlin really missed the boat by not joining Winchester and T/C in chambering for this fine round and because of it the popularity of the 7-30 has suffered.  I am a reloader so scarsity of factory ammo, although available,  isn't a factor in my decision. Thanks for your offer of help.  Edwin

I talked to him today, he said if he had to get the barrel in rough form and thread, drill tap, dovetail, chamber and contour it the cost would run in the $400+ range. If one could get it from marlin mostly fitted he could just chamber & install, would be much cheaper. He was figuring the rough barrel at about $200. I had a 7-30 and liked the little round a lot but don't consider it any better than the 3030. A round I'd love to have is a 25 waters. Or a 25-35 A.I. type of thing. I'd buy one tomarrow If I could. It would be legal for deer here and would be a great half flat shooting coyote round.
