Mohawk's hog hunt results
« on: August 24, 2004, 07:31:11 AM »
Got back the other day from my trip to east Texas for my annual summer hog hunt. The .280 harvested two the first day. I could not get on in handgun range but the .280 worked flawlessly. My partner used a AK style .223 with horrible results. He had never been on a hog hunt before and learned very quickly that hogs ain't enemy soldiers. He borrowed my .280 the second day and and got his two hogs. Used the .280 150gr. Pointed Soft-Point Core-lokts and all four animals were shot through and through. Hogs ran from 0 yds to 40 yds after hit. One of my buddies hogs was hit four times with a .223 in the lungs and we trailed it for several hours before losing the trail. Overall, a good hunt. I have some in the crock pot already.

Hey Mohawk,

Great job!  Sounds like you had a successful and fun trip.  Any possibilities of pics?

I guess your friends experience will add one more point to the data that although you can use a .223 to kill hogs, it is not the ideal cartridge.  It needs a perfect "behind the ear" shot to be effective.

Matt

Yep, that is what I tried to tell him. Between the ear and the eye.  I've done it once with a .22 Mag but it is hard down there to get a still shot. The rancher said they have skinned hogs before with old .223 size bullets lodged under the hide and ribs. Said the hogs shake them off pretty well. But the .280 on the other hand filled the larder with respect and great esteem. Wish I could do pics, but no scanner. Never done pics.
