Where are all the Canada Geese??
« on: August 25, 2004, 03:04:33 AM »
I live on a small lake (230 acres) in upstate NY and it is usually crawling with geese.  For the last 2 months I have not seen any geese on the lake or surroundings!  2 months ago there were hundreds of geese on it daily, including 15-20 on my lawn leaving "presents" every day.  So my question is, where are all of the geese now?  I have seen some in a few nearby fields but even those are sparse.
Also, our early goose season starts on Sept 1 if I am lucking a bag a few (we are allowed 8 per day) what is the best way to field dress them.  Should I just breast them, skin them or pluck them??

Sorry not sure about the question but it seems like that here in PA too. The only geese I seen was where you cant hunt.

Eight a day?  Wow, I am jealous.  We are only allowed three.  I hope you limit out several days.

I say breast them.  That is what we always do.

The Ranch is in the Flyway and I count and watch them divide over me.The Western flyway is about 1% of what I knew 50-6- years ago and there is less and less Wetlands. They do land in my ponds as do other Water fown but the flocks are smaller each year.

I really don't think the flocks are getting smaller at all. The Canada Goose is getting civilized aka. more city geese. Here near Wichita Kansas we have a specal goose hunt just for that reason.

Another reason I think the goose pop. isn't down like you think, we in Kansas and in many other states are allowed many more birds than ever before. It was but maybe 15 years ago we could only shoot 1 perday now 3 a day. Look at the guy from NY 8 per day. That tells me the pop. is up or the Feds wouldn't allow us to shoot so many.

Now we talk about light goose(snows/blues) we can shoot 20 a day.
In Feb. we can use elctric calls for them and no bag limit and NO plug is required.
