454 Deer Loads
« on: January 18, 2003, 02:23:17 AM »
I just wanted to thank everyone for the insight on the 454 loads [XPB'S] Still going to try them and 230 Speer Gold Dots.I will stillkeep a few 300 XTP Mags around just for the fact they real good in my Rageing Bull, and maybe I might get a Chance to hunt a little bigger game someday.I also came across a screaming deal on some Loaded Winchester Ammo 260 Grain Partition Gold .I could pass up buying 100 round of factory Loaded ammo at $5.47 a box of twenty.I thought it was a missprint till I ordered it on the web. I have heard a lot of good reports on this bullet. Can't wait to try them out ! By the way reason I want to try something that opens up more is for better rib cage hole. More blood the better ,always is my first shot choice ,must be the bow hunter in me coming out ! Thanks everybody , and good luck shootin' the big one. :D

If I were you rather than making assumptions on what that Barnes bullet with the gaping hole will do I'd try them in some expansion media. It is generally conceded that if a HP is gonna open at all it will do so in water. I tried them in water filled jugs and while I was unable to capture a bullet the damage indicated they were passing on thru with zero expansion or nearly zero. I lined up as many as 6 gallon milk jugs and never stopped a bullet and the holes out were as in just a caliber size hole. None of the jugs really exploded like with a JHP.
