Smart? No way. Since I was about 10 years old, though, I started reading about some of the better known worldwide hunters: Gates, McElroy, O'Connor, Abruzzi, etc... The different kinds of Markhor have always been of interest to me. As of now, they are listed as a CITES I (I think) animal and illegal for importation to the U.S.A. in any form. Several groups are trying to have it listed lower in the CITES categories so that sporthunting by foreignors is acceptable. The problem lies in that they inhabit the portion of Pakistan that is being (and has been) fought over between Pakistan and India for quite some time. Like the Giant Sable of Angola, many feared the war and poaching may drive the Markhor to extinction. That hasn't been the case (for either the Markhor or the Giant Angolan Sable) and good numbers are being reported since the fighting has ceased. Unfortunately, Pakistan or India (or both) put up a fence between the two countries and some feel the Markhor may be suffering by its habitat being severed. I have no idea and am only reporting what little bit of info I can find.
Hunts for the Markhor are likely to be well above what I would ever be able to afford, even if the animal is approved for hunting.
As far as the mouse deer, I forget where I'd seen a picture of one of those before, but thought it was here someone had posted a question about it.
I do fully intend to do some hunts in mid-Asia at some point. After this trip to Zim is over and paid for, I think my next out-of-Alaska hunt will be for Marco Polo Sheep and Mid-Asian Ibex.
