What's the good method of cutting down a stock (short of bringing to a gunsmith)?

How to cut down butt stock

rob4, one metheod is to use a power mitre saw (chop saw) with a fine plywood blade. Cover the area to be cut with masking tape to help prevent any splinters and scribe a line where the cut is to be made, pre cut the line with a razorknife/blade to also help prevent splinters. Prop up or otherwise adjust the part of the stock that attaches to the receiver so the longitudinal center line of the stock is parrallel to the saw table (right angle to the blade).

Prior to making any cut remove the buttplate or recoil pad and drill two 1/4" holes into the rear of the stock where the buttplate was removed. Make sure these holes go at least 1" past the line where the piece is to be be removed. Save the piece of wood you cut off and then when you decide you want to replace that piece use 1/4" dowels and good wood glue (gorilla glue or woodworkers exterior yellow glue) to reattach the piece. By drilling the holes prior to cutting the piece fits on EXACTLY where it should with no trouble.

Make all cuts carefully and slowly and remember, measure twice and cut once. If you don't have power tools available the same method can be used with hand tools....Good Luck....<><....

Used a compound miter, crosscut blade, matched the angle, taped the cut, drilled the 1/4 inch holes for reassembly as he grows, and cut off about 1 and 7/8 inches and added a Pachmaur? recoil pad.  Worked great, my son is happy.  Fit's him great.  Now if I can get him a dove...

Thanks all.
