.17 HMR: CZ 452, Henry Varmint Exress or WIN 9417 ?
« on: August 30, 2004, 05:52:20 AM »
which one would you prefer for accurate shooting?
Caliber = .17HMR

Perhaps I'd be better of with a bolt action this time?
Normally, I'd go hands down for a lever, but this time, I want a rifle that shoots consistent 1" groups at 100 yards.
Perhaps even further, say 150 yards, but I won't push it to its outer limits in outdoor (wind, rain) conditions...

So, here are the options:

a CZ 542 or the Henry Varmint express?

Either one I get, will be scoped
(Even though I wouldn't allow an optic near my other levers, if I get the the Henry I'll put a 4x scope on top of it)

Thanks in advance...

Either one is good. The Henry will shoot great groups . My 22 mag shoots .5 groups at 50 yards easily and the 17 is supposed to be a good paper puncher with better wind resistance at 100 yards. Just read a article in the new gun digest and the writer said the 17 was great on paper and Small critters prairrie dog size and smaller. Want to shoot some thing bigger and stay with a rimfire get a 22 mag. Depends on wether you want a bolt or a lever but either will do the job.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

i want a lever, but common sense tells me to get a bolt gun, because of its superior accuracy.
I haven't got a bolt gun yet, All I have are lever actions, sixshooters and single six'es: I much prefer the old fashioned way. (Ain't even got a 1911 !)

The problem is I haven't set my priorities:
(*)a very accurate gun but completely different style, or
(*)a lever that looks and handles right, but doesn't shoot as accurate ( ?) as the bolt gun.

I'm still in much doubt...

EDIT:  I just heard about the Win 9417: any opinions on those?

Like I said My Henry 22 mag shoots under .5 inches at 50 yards with ammo it likes. How more accurate do you want?

Did a quick check on a other forum that has a Henry site and the guys there say the Henry in 17 HMR shoots under a inch at 100 yards. I would think that would be good enough to satisfy your accuracy and you lever urges. Actually one guy said he probably could do better tban a inch if he shot better he felt the gun was up to it more so than he was. He still shoots a inch at 100 yards Which is moa so I would say the Henry 17 is up to the task as is all their rifles. Jim

Ok, I got the point...

Here's why all those questions:
I don't have the opportunity (nor the cash) to try out all those calibers and guns (remember Belgium is very restrictive about firearms: It took me nearly a year to have my Win Trapper in 357M imported!)
I most likely will have to go through all this again to get this new gun, that's why I try to learn as much as possible from other's experiences...
And if I don't like it, I'm stuck with it, as only very few would ever want to buy a firearm over here (= it's not gonna happen). And to top it all, we're limited to a 5-firearm-per-person law. and, they cost 3-4 times the USA price.

Since you have that decision go to the other gun forums that have 22 sites besides this one and see what they say. Then you can have a idea though the ultimate choice is still yours.  As far as tbe Henry goes go to their website and look at all the letters of satisfied owners. Yea  mine is there also. It may help you decidide one way or the other. Either choice is good and CZ's are nice guns yet  I am very happy with my 22 mag Henry.
