Have you read a good book on GPS use. if so tell us about it
« on: August 31, 2004, 04:50:07 PM »
The other day I checked the County Library for books on GPS.  Wow, what a lack of books on gps units and use.  I found one by Scottie Barnes, "Basic Essentials.  Global Positioning Systems."  The author noted that some of the information would be out of date before the book was published.  He was right.  The book was copyrighted in 2000.  Since then manufactures has discontinued a number of units that were the top of the line four years ago.  The newer mid line gps units now have more memory, and more functions then the older (4 years) models.

The book also contains information that is not outdated and may turn the light on for the new gps user.

Using a scoring system of one * to five ***** stars I would rate the four year old book with ** stars for content and *** stars for easy of reading.(the easy of reading is based on the Good ole Boy system.)  The book may have more meaning to the new user.

Clearly we live in an electronic age.  A piece of equipment is obsolete when we take it home from the store, be it a new high speed computer, or a gps unit.  One unit the author mentions is the GPSIII Plus.  A top of the line unit at the time, and still a very good unit.  At the time in cost $570 new.  Government agency's used it to map the edge of wildfires, areas damaged by major storms, and flood damage.  While still in use it has been replaced on the produce line.

I gave my wife another Christmas gift idea.  It's a book called, "GPS for dummies."  Seems fitting.

Your gonna hate me for this but here goes.

I was in Eugene, OR a few weeks ago at GI Joes and had your book in my hand. It's about the size of a Tom Clancy novel or maybe it was like War and Peace. Anyway it had A to Z about GPS, maps, navigation and other neat stuff. I'm a bona fide college trained marine/aviation navigator and I learned clock&compass, sextant, LORAN, map reading and all that stuff. I can do VOR, TACAN, ADF and throw a stick tied to a string overboard. This book had stuff in it that was new to me.

Now ya wanta know the name of the book dontcha. I FORGOT!

GI Joes does have a web site and they have quite a few locations in OR. I'll be headed to Eugene again in the not too distant future so I'll either buy the book or get the name and ISBN number. As soon as I do I'll post the info here unless you beat me to it.

"GPS for Dummies" was IBSN 0764569333 PUBLISHED May 4, 2004.  ISBN 0764569333.  I'll have to look-up GI Joe's.  Excuse any errors, I just broke my glasses.

I just found two Garmin publications regarding GPS units, and mapping.

(1) GPS Guide For Beginners

(2) Using a Garmin GPS with Paper Maps.

Frankly both publications will help with any brand gps.  And "Using a Garmin GPS with Paper Maps" contains information helpful for those that want to stick with a compass and a paper map.

Both Garmin and Magellan also provide downloadable manuals for their GPS units at their website.

Publications (1) and (2) and be downloaded free of charge at  www.garmin.com/aboutGPS/manual.html  they are pdf files.

If you are aware of any Magellan or brand X publications that would help the general user please let us know.
