The other day I checked the County Library for books on GPS. Wow, what a lack of books on gps units and use. I found one by Scottie Barnes, "Basic Essentials. Global Positioning Systems." The author noted that some of the information would be out of date before the book was published. He was right. The book was copyrighted in 2000. Since then manufactures has discontinued a number of units that were the top of the line four years ago. The newer mid line gps units now have more memory, and more functions then the older (4 years) models.
The book also contains information that is not outdated and may turn the light on for the new gps user.
Using a scoring system of one * to five ***** stars I would rate the four year old book with ** stars for content and *** stars for easy of reading.(the easy of reading is based on the Good ole Boy system.) The book may have more meaning to the new user.
Clearly we live in an electronic age. A piece of equipment is obsolete when we take it home from the store, be it a new high speed computer, or a gps unit. One unit the author mentions is the GPSIII Plus. A top of the line unit at the time, and still a very good unit. At the time in cost $570 new. Government agency's used it to map the edge of wildfires, areas damaged by major storms, and flood damage. While still in use it has been replaced on the produce line.
