I went out to the Roy Rogers Museum in Victorville California this mornin and took the RO 1 class. It was hosted by the Double R Bar Regulators. It was a great location, and the training was presented by Marshall Law and his partner....Roan (I think that was his name). They both are knowledgeable and did a great job

I had thought it would be newer SASS members in the training. I saw several folks attendin the class that have belonged to SASS for quite some time. It was explained that new shooters gain a foundation or understanding of the rules and safety issues and experienced shooters benefit from the training because of rule changes, and as a refresher.

It helped me to understand some of the things I wasn't sure about in the SASS shooters handbook. I recommend the class for any who have yet to take it. Only a couple of hours, a chance to ask questions, a short test and its done.

Did you cover a lot of stuff not in the handbook? I've heard others say that more rules and regs are in ROI and ROII so you need those along with the handbook to get everything.

This will show my ignorance: was there a cost? Did a club or higher up group put this on? Any hands on activities?
This is something I want to do but right now pretty much have my hands full.

I think the ROI is usually $10-20 with about going to SASS and the rest usually to the host club. That's the way it's done around here anyway.

In this case I think the Double R Bar Regulators requested an RO I class, and Marshall Law came to their meeting place to put it on. The cost was$5.00, although I have heard it is usually $10.00.

Not really a hands on course, however questions, comments were solicited by Marshal Law many times during the training. There was a fair amount of dialogue that took place.

There was more information reference stage and match disqualifications than what I think I have found in the shooters handbook.

I agree with that statement. From what I understand the RO II class goes into course design and some other areas as well.

I know that I felt more confidant today at the match I shot in because of the RO I training. Probably just cuz I have this phobia about not screwing up :wink: :wink: :wink: I also felt comfortable enough to spot and scorekeep today because of the training. Not saying that one can't do those things without the RO training....just sayin I feel more comfortable when I know for sure what is what.

Sounds like something I need to take as soon as possible. Will check with my club and see what they have in store. Thanks for the heads-up.
Agree with you that screwing up in front of others is high on the list of things NOT to do.

The SASS rulebook has gotten a lot like the constitution, it takes two commities, a forum, and a director to interpret them. It's really hard to believe all of the squirming and loophole jumping some people go through. The RO1 course is good, it is class room presentation and discussion of interpretation of the rules. It's a good class for anyone involved in CAS. It can be given by any RO2, which makes it pretty easy to organize a class for your club.
