Chaning Rifle Barrel
« on: September 01, 2004, 12:54:21 PM »
Ok, when I swapped my ML barrel for .308, the guy used a hammer to knock out the pin and put in the new barrel.  I recently got another barrel and it does not look as easy as when the guy did it.  Any suggestions or comments on how you swap your barrel.

Thanks

Bob

Remove the forearm, open the action, tap the pin out. Reverse for installing. Piece of cake.   KN

It just takes a little fidgeting to line the lug hole up with the frame hole, thats all.  Ive been told its easier with the pistol bbls cuz they are shorter, but a few seconds of eyeballin should be all yer looking for.

I keep a small bench hammer and a 8" wooden dowel in my barrel box so I never touch the frame with the hammer, just the dowel.  Don't have to worry about missing or messing anything up.

Since my hammer head is hard plastic (hobby hammer) I sometimes tap the pin directly in after aligning everthing.  My theory is never force it.  When things are aligned, it goes in.  If not, it hangs up.

Hope this helps!

Mike

Thanks for the input.  The guy that changed it was using all metal, hammer/dowell, and I was worried it might mess that pin up.

I made me a wooden dowel stick to tap out my pin with and it works real good. It don't mar up the pin or anything.
