I have been looking into a new encore rifle lately and because it will be my first encore and could be a while before getting another barrel I want this one to handle a couple different jobs and have some chance of being able to buy ammo off the self if needed. I want to be confident in shooting 200 lb. class deer and use it for p-dog & varmit hunting. Saving hides does not matter to me. My thoughts were the 25-06 or 260 rem and had settled on the 260 because it takes so much less powder to come up with near the same vel. as the 06.
My dilemma started today when I look in tc's custom cal. listing and spot this 6mm-06. I know I can't get shells up town but I got 06 brass coming out my ears.
I have never seen anythig on the 6-06 So where can I find data on it?
Has anyone had expiernce with it? hows its accuracy? Will it handle deer and varmiting? Where would I be able to get loading dies ?

6mm-06 = the .240 Whetherby. Look there for data.

not to be rude an i never realy looked at that round before but are the charts close enough to use or are you saying they are the exact same thing?

The 6mm-06 will certainly handle the animals that you have planned for it, but it is going to heat up the barrel, rapidly. For your purpose, I'd choose the .260 Rem.

What I'm saying is the .240 Whby. is a .30-06 with a belt. Case is identical except for the belt and the Whby. radius shoulder. Everyone I know accepts that the load data for both is the same. Case capacity if you measured both should be identical or as close as can be expected from two cases of different brands but same chambering.

Look over the dimensions in any loading manual and you'll see what I mean.

Tripper, Layne Simpson reloaded 6mm-06 (custom shop TC Encore) in an article in one of the magazines I get. Not at home now but I'll dig through it early next week and see which article it was in. What Graybeard stated was correct with the 240 WM round. Layne is an accomplished reloader and he started with the data on that round to develop his 6mm-06 data.

Also as the subject stated check out Sierra's newest manual it has data on that round.

Thanks for the info. guuys. After checking with the locale gun shop to see what waiting period there would be I have decided to wait until after deer season (Nov. for me) to make the change over. I never thought about comparing the 243 in all this, would of made to much sense I guess. I did look at 257 roberts but already have one in a rem. bolt.
