Looking for some good places to hunt groundhogs around London Ontario.
Anyone help me out? :D   Maybe someone can join me?  I stay in Strathroy from April until October.

Hey Hummer, I live in St. Thomas Ont. and have relatives that own a farm near Iona..(I know, I know where's that...)  Iona is on Hwy 3 south west of London about 20 Kms.  Friends/neighbours of my father in law have farms with a lot of ground hogs and would welcome hunters.  I'm just writing my hunting license exam here in a week or two and hope to get a small games license and get out there, all I do is plink at the farm right now. There's also a pile of racoons and possums so its a good area for small game. (Also tons of deer and geese).

Just let me know sometime, I'd be happy to set you up with a place to hunt or show you the area and get out hunting.

When I first moved to Canada almost 30 years ago I hunted the area north of Brampton for quite a few years.  Boy was it great. The area around Georgetown was crawling with them.  Within 10 years very few were left, and I was driving almost to Owen Sound on Georgian Bay for woodchuck.  They haven't been hunted out.  They've been poisoned.  Damn yuppies with their hobby farms can't have their expensive horses stepping in woodchuck holes now can they?  Areas that were loaded with woodchuck holes and the associated dirt piles are now a lovely, rich green with nary a hole to be found.  I certainly cannot say I'm thrilled by it though.  Best wishes.

Hi Cal:
There are still lots of groundhogs along highway 6 north of Fergus and Mount Forest.   Don't worry they keep coming back...you can't get rid of these critters that easily!  So far I have nailed 26 and they still keep popping up.  Last year I nailed 30  in the same fields....no poison!  ..just plain old .243.  ( The fields are near Komoka .....)  When I have more time I hope to get up to Hwy 6 and nailed some there.

Don't give up!
take care Hummer

Hello Hummer,

That's good to hear.  I'm a little miffed at people poisoning the little critters.  Some of my happiest days were spent hunting woodchuck within an hour of Toronto.  Last time I visited a friend there early this summer we had to drive almost to Georgian Bay for decent woodchuck hunting.  Best wishes.

Hi
I hunt near Walkerton and this year the hogs have never been thicker. I got 53 this summer, mostly on my dad's farm. I went hunting with my friend in Grey County. We found a big hay field with no less than 76 hog holes in it!

I hunt arouind strathroy where the ground is sandy..they are everywhere.
My daugher lives in Owen Sound  and hopefully I will get up there and do sum grdhog hunting.  There are a lot in Grey and up hwy 6.    You see them  when I go up for a visit.
What do you use?  I use a Ruger .243...I load my own shells ..saves a few dollars.  I usually sit tight overlooking a large field.  Some times I see a coyote..got 3 of those in the past 2 years.
Last year I nailed only 30...but the farmer was very greatful that at least one field was reduced in numbers.

Right now I am hunting rabbits ..only when it is not that cold out.  Can't wait for spring to get back to grdhog hunting.
Take care
Tomorrow is another day!

I use a .22-250. I love that gun, except the way it blows my ears apart. I only ever forgot my ear protectors once!

This is an old thread, but I'm a new member around here..and it's my favorite topic.  :)   Looking to connect with the guys who've posted here, and anyone looking to share their Ontario groundhog experiences!  Better yet, if you have any hogs that need a little attention, I'd be happy to pay you a visit this spring/summer!
