mini 14 vs. ranch rifle
« on: September 04, 2004, 08:28:50 PM »
I know that I want to buy a mini, now the only question is the mini 14 or the ranch rifle.  I have no desire to attach a scope and like the sights on the mini better.  I have also heard that the rr has a slightly better edge on accuracy.  I don't mind the rr if I can find a good set of aftermarket sights.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Michael

I have had a Mini for just about 30 years---model 141--keeps on shooting and drops Coyotes and Bobcats now, only problem has been using a 20 rnd M-16 mag as it jams.

I have a ruger ranch 188 series.  The rear flip down rear peep is junk.  In the dovetail that holds the factory flip down sight you can install an M1 carbine sight.  The M1 carb sight will take a little filling but it's well worth it.  Or you can get a Williams WGRS peep sight that mounts right in the dove tail.

Be sure to use blue locktite on sight adjusting screw otherwise it will most likely work loose.

If I had it to do over again I'd probably just get the standard mini as I don't use a scope much anymore.  But how knows, in a few years my eyes might not focus the peep sight so well and I'll need a scope.  With the ranch I'll just use ruger rings or one of a couple different bases that attach to the ruger ring lugs built into the reciever.

If you ever want help accurizing it let me know.  I can pass on a bunch of tips that can really tighten up the mini's groups.  I'll never been a bench rifle, but it'll definitely be a "hunting accurate" and makes an excellent reliable hunting rifle.

Hope this helps!

After owning a couple of standard Minis and trading them off, I bought a Ranch Rifle a few years ago and have not regretted it. I don't think much of the standard Mini front sight anyway (the stainless version being really hard for me to pick up), so the relatively crude flip up rear doesn't much bother me... although I am tempted to enlarge the aperture slightly. If I wanted to use irons, I'd get the - admittedly not cheap - XS Sight Systems front/rear 24/7 set that has the tritium front post.

There are a handful of other good replacement rear sights now, Brownell's offering a couple of them. A GI M-1 Carbine sight can also be adapted, but it is something of a craftsman's task.

Originally, my intention was to put a good 4x scope on my Mini-14 permanently, but the scope came back off pretty fast; this carbine really comes alive with a Millett red dot (or similar aiming device), the penalty being a very slight loss of handiness. The little bugger is certainly not a match gun, but it does shoot better than my earlier Minis (it also tosses the empties a LONG way out to the right and forward).

NECG also makes receiver peep sights that mount using the rear scope mounting block. I have one on each a Mini-Thirty and a Ranch Rifle with Houge overmolded stocks.

No plans for a scope??? Get a regular Mini--as the iron sights are immensely better than those on the Ranch model.

Or you can wait for the new models to come out---with redesigned sights.

I have a 181 series. I would get a non-ranch if I had no plans of scoping.

I though I read on another thread that Ruger was going to discontinue the mini 14, and just go with the mini 14 Ranch Model?

Any truth to that?
