American Pioneer Powder?
« on: September 05, 2004, 03:15:53 PM »
I have seen this product advertised on TV as being able to fire over 2000 shots without cleaning.  Pretty fantastic claim.  I was wondering if there is anyone out here who has tried it?  Also wanted to know if it will ignite in Flintlock without a precharge of black poweder?  Would appreciate info.  I am new to this forum, and am really glad to see it here.  I have been shooting muzzle loaders off and on for about 30 years.  Have never fired one of the new in-line things.  I really like flintlocks!!  There is nothing like the smell of sulphur and singed hair in the morning

I have a can of fffg equivalent I got for my C&B revolver. I haven't had a chance to try it yet in there. I did fill the flash pan on my flintlock pistol with it and it didn't seem to flash as easily as even ffg black would. In fact, it was only about 30% dependable as priming powder, but then again my pistol has a pretty shabby lock on it. I never made any loads with it. When I did burn it it made a little white smoke and no sulfur smell. It was sort of depressing really. I would estimate it is atleast as dependable for me as Pyrodex RS was though

As soon as I get a chance I will burn some in my C&B pistol and see how that turns out.

Yup, tried it, didn't like it....real coarse stuff, looks like something you'd find in your driveway, gravel looking almost. It's so coarse, it's hard to get volume measures to be consistently the same. If I had a chrono, I'm sure it would have shown quite a variance in shot to shot velocity. Shoots clean but much lower velocity compared with equal volume of goex, hit a couple inches lower at just 50yds! Didn't like that cuz ya need to use more and it costs more! T7 shoots much better and is just as clean and ya get more shots for your $$. I'd just as soon use goex or T7 if I had to make a choice.

Thank you for the information.  You saved me some $$ and probably a lot of frustration.  I think I will stick with the real "smelly" stuff.  After 30 some years it wouldn't seem right if it didn't stink and get dirty. :)
