I'm seriously looking at their half scale Napoleon barrel (2 1/4" bore).  Anyone have any experience with this barrel in particular.... or Hern Iron Works in general?

Make sure you ask questions.  If you have a copy of the More Complete Cannoneer read up on cannon casting. If you don't have a copy get one.  It's a $20 investment that will save you money down he road.

Ask them about them about there casting techniques. Ask them about their liners.

Hi, I'm still in the research and saving pennies stage of cannon ownership, but this much I have learned. Hern supplies Dixie Gun Works with most of their barrels, but it is cheaper to deal with Hern direct. Dixie does have recomended loads and other good info in the catalog though.

Because Hern sells cannon tubes to Dixie I wouldn't consider that a testimony as to the quality of Hern products.  It would put a plus factor in the research however.
