Remington Super Magnum Express Problem
« on: January 19, 2003, 05:09:03 AM »
I received a Remington 870 Super Magnum with 3 1/2" chamber this Christmas. Took it out and fired it and found it won't extract cartridges part of the time. The spent cartridges appear to be in a bind. The gun will pull the edge of the rim off the cartridge (after some effort) leaving it in place. The cartridge then can be easily popped out with a wooden dowel. I took the Shotgun back to the store, they gave me a different barrel but the problem remains. I have since sent the gun to a Remington repair center. Have not heard back from them. Has anybody out there experienced similiar problems or have an idea what could be wrong? I have had several Remington's over the years put this experience has turned me off on them forever. It's hard to believe their quality control would allow a gun like this out of the factory. BTW, Remington nor the store would exchange the gun for a new one.

Puzzling.  What brand of ammo are you using?  I had a H&R single shot once that would eject all ammo except Federal.  Only difference between my problem and yours was it would take a dowel rod and a hammer to get the case out of the gun.  Seems stange that the shell would go into the magazine easy but not eject.  I have had better luck with Remington Shotguns over the years than any other.  Give em a chance and see what they do.

I am done rambling now.

Good Luck.

The problem seems to occur most with Federals although it does it with all brands I have tried.

I wonder what it is with Federal shells. I had a Mossberg 500 do the same thing with Federals.

I have a similar problem with Federal steel loads in my older wingmaster. They usually hang up enough that thefresh round from the mag gets caught under it. Haven't had to hammer one out yet but occasionaly have to rap the but on the ground to eject the hull.
Just another worthless opinion!!

5090,
I'm sorry to hear about your tribulations with your Remington 870 Express Super Mag, but it doesn't surprise me.

I sent the one that I purchased back to the factory repair center 2 times, before selling it and purchasing a Benelli Nova. The stamped parts was the problem with my 870. The shell interceptor on the right side had a burr on it and would catch on the side wall of the receiver not allowing any ammo to be extracted from the magazine and be pumped into the chamber.

All the repair center had to do was unstake the shell interceptor, run a Drimmel tool over it (to grind the burrs off of it) and restake it back into the side wall of the receiver. With the tools available at their service center it would've taken less than 30 minutes.

While my 870 was away for repairs, the second time, I took it upon myself to shop around and see if this was an isolated incident or a common event. At a Cabelas store in Dundee, Michigan, I talked with several guys at the gun counter that were shopping for another brand of shotgun due to simular misfortunes with Remington Express model shotguns. Length or brand of ammo made no difference, where feed jams were concerned.

I'm not posting this as a "bashing" statement. I used to like Remington shotguns because they fit me and have performed well in the past. However, as many of us do, I work hard for my money and expect to get more for it than what I've received with this 870 Express purchase. I would also go as far to say that I'd purchase another 870 IF it was a Wingmaster. The finished internal parts make a world of difference.

Anyway.....I purchased a Benelli Nova and am very happy with it's performance. Full camo, 3 choke tubes, sling studs are standard, easy to maintain and it's priced at $350.00.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I agree with you 100% on the Wingmaster, Express comment.  They are not able to sell a gun for $250 less just by using different wood and a parkerized finish.  The parts might be the same, but they are not finished the same.  All three of my 870's are Wingmaster.  Had an Express one time and guess what, I sold it within a year.  It did not have any particular problem, you could just tell it was not a Wingmaster.

I experienced same problems with my 870 Express Super Mag the first time I took it goose hunting.  Before that, I only shot 1 shot at a time, as it was my dedicated turkey gun, so I never had any problems ejecting shells for follow-up shots.  I figured that I was not bringing the slide completely back before returning it forward.  Perhaps my gun needs to go in too.  Please keep us advised on whether Remington fizes the defect.

i have an 870 supermag and i was having problems with it pulling 2 and 3/4 out of the magazine and also my barrel nut does not like to stay tight and that seems to contribute to the problem but i haven't had ne problems with them coming out of the barrel
