I'm looking for a more exaustive history of .308's and some of the other military and nonmilitary, wildcat type loads what books would you gents recommend or web sights for that matter.

The only one I can think of is Cartridges of the World. I do not remember the author but some one may know and chime in. If your local library does not have it I am sure they can get it for you. Reloading guides have some info but not detailed maybe as you would like. Midway has a good book catalog called the pigskin library contact them at their website and they will send it to you their might be some books in there you may want and the Dixie catalog has some gun books listed as well. Thanks Ifigured being a little silly would brighten someones day. Cartridges of the world is also available at OLBC guess I will have to buy it. Has anyone seen a copy? If yes could you tell me if it has more details than the reloading manuals.

It did not have as much info as I would have liked. I would suggest the library route and if they do not have it they can get it for you then if you like it and want a copy you will not be buying a pig in a poke so to speak.

Yes, Cartridges of the World by Frank Barnes has a lot of great info on all cartridges, including the date they were introduced, and what cartridge they were parented by. It has a nice short history on the military roundm, and how Winchester tacked their name to the original 7.62 NATO cartridge and actually offered it as a civilian sporting cartridge a couple years before the military finally accepted it.

The 7.62 Nato, or 308 Winchester, is, in my opinion, just about the best all around cartridge in the world. It has plenty of power for all game in the States, and Canada, in the hands of a rifleman. With most bullet wts it's only 200 fps slower than the tried and proven 3006. Military ammo is available , cheaply, and commercial ammo is available most anywhere. Just my opinion. POWDERMAN.
