Diameter bullets for 7.62x54R
« on: September 08, 2004, 04:04:44 PM »
I'm told that most Mosin Nagants have a .310 bore.  The selection of 310 diameter bullets on the market are slim to be sure.  Would loading 311 or 312 bullets with the Russian drive pressure up too much or would a thou or two not make that big a difference?

thanks,
Ian

It's my understanding that the "Spec." on the bore is something like .3108, and I've heard of Nagants being slugged anywhere from .309 to .313 with the vast majority being .311 or more.

If I were you I'd start with .311's and see how they shoot.

I slugged it last night with a 30cal cast bullet that measured 310, Tops of the lands came out to like 304 but it wasn't fat enough to reach the bottom of the grooves.  I question the land height as it wasn't a dead soft slug I was using.  I dunno if that would make a difference.

I'll let ya know which one shoots better.

I know mine doesn't like 308s, I ordered some 150gr 311s and 180gr 312s tonight to try out.
