:-D I used to shoot 90 Grains of Goex IIIF at 100 yard targets with a .54 cal rb rifle but the headache after 30 shots drove me to a .36 cal. For hunting I shot 90g of Pistol grade Pyrodex in a Hawken at first and it was adequate for deer to 100 yards.. Used the R/S grade in double barrel shotguns. I have a .54 cal 35 inch half stock flinter, so now use black powder for hunting. The load is 90g Goex 3f on a .535 patched ball.. about the same for a .50 flinter, ie. .495 ball and 90g Goex 3f.. These deer here are usually about 85 to 140 pounds.. Once every few years one about 175 lbs shows up.. We keep the freezer stocked with the usual size ones.
I hear it is hard to find black powder more and more these days, but it is cheaper and seems to go off better than the alternative powders....from cbagman
