Taurus for Super Redhawk
« on: September 10, 2004, 08:25:52 AM »
I have a Raging Bull in 44 mag and was told I can not mount a scope because of the porting(6.5" barrel.) Was maybe looking at selling the RB and buying a Super Redhawk in 44mag or 480 ruger. I was just wondering how the ruger shoots without porting. I will shoot 270-300gr loads in 44mag. Is going for the Ruger a good decision? And if I do go for it would the 480 be a better choice than the 44mag? Don't mind long detailed answers.

You were told wrong. There is or at least was a mount base for the 6.5" barrels and some are bound to still be available. But even if not all is not lost. You can take one for an 8-3/8" barrel and just cut off the excess and use it. The way they fit on the barrel vents it will work fine I'm sure.

While I like the Taurus base a bit better B-Square also makes bases for the RBs.

I'd sure never trade off or sell an RB for a Ruger SRH. No way Jose. A SRH in .44 Mag recoils at least as much if not more than an RB in either .454 or .480.

That sounds great!!Looks like I can focus more cash on a scope. Any recommendations? Do I have to be cautious on buying too long of a scope that might get the objective lens damaged or will most pistolscopes work?

Well for sure short barrels with scope mounted on barrel are a bit tricky. Scope needs to be set back as far in the rings as possible and you need as short a scope as possible.

My recommendation would be to get a Leupold 2X hadngun scope. It's really all the power you need for a revolver and has the widest FOV of them all. Variables are all gonna be much longer and I don't think any other fixed power is as short or has as wide a FOV.

Get Burris Signature Zee Rings so if you need to you can use offset inserts to get the POI well centered in the scopes view before you have to start using the scopes adjustments. This really helps in the off chance you need to make a lot of adjustment to get POA and POI the same.

Pull the scope back to you as far as it will go and set the rings in the positions on the base that allows it to set back as far as possible. You really don't want that objective over the holes in the barrel and at least 1/2" or more is far better.

300winman,

I believe the taurus folks will tell you you can use scope / base on the 6.5" RB. I recently purchased base for 8 3/8" RB, saw ref. to mounts on 6.5".

The base is nice. I have mounted and recently put a bushnell red dot sight on it. Have app. 300 target rounds (lead) through it as well as app. 150 mid to "upper end" loads as well. Scope is rock solid.

So far with 240 swc lead and clays / hp38 I am getting app. 1.5" groups @ 25 yds.

With 210 speer gold dot and a stiff load of Lil Gun I am getting app. 1.25" groups. 5o yard groups are app. double. The WW 296 is slightly more accurate but the fireball is tremendous and alarms people @ the range. The w296 also has a much more pronounced "snap" in recoil (still a pussycat).

The verdict is not out yet on the red dot. I might try a 2x weaver next year.

Midsouth Shooters Supply carries the B-Square brand base for the 6.5" RB 44 in both blue and SS I believe.

Thanks for the info. I just went to local gunshop and found the taurus mount for $50. Also saw a 2-6 power Bushnell Trophy scope for $160 that would match my pistol. It is a used scope with light ring marks but other than that it looks great. Would this be a good scope for the RB?

Yup sure would. I used one on a S&W 629 Classic DX (bought long before the agreement S&W made with the devil) and it held up just fine. Once when I was readying to get down from one of my treehouse stands I managed to bend over and let it drop from the shoulder holster I carried it in because I had not yet snapped it closed. Did no harm at all to the scope even tho that's what hit first and took the full brute of the fall. When I checked it on my range later it was still dead on.

They are good scopes.
