SLUG SUGGESTIONS

I have a 11-87 Premier Cantilever Deer Gun. If anyone has the same gun I was wondering what slugs you use and what kind of groups are you getting with them? It will help me narrow down the initial slug selection. There are so many different slugs out there it is hard to figure out where to start. Any input would be appreciated.

my dad has that gun...its an excellent slug gun....i can shoot one inch groups that overlap at 50 yards without a rest.

the gun will shoot as well as you can hold it.

dad uses 2 3/4 inch federals. dont bother with sabots in that rifled choke tube...it keyholes them at very close range.

The cantilever deer is fully rifled and you should use sabot slugs to get the full benefit from it. I would recommend Winchester Partition golds, my father shoots them out of his winchester 1300 with great accuracy. Not to mention that they throw a 385gr 50 cal slug at 1900 fps! But I would also check out Lightfield IDS and the Remington Core-lokt Ultras for comparison. The Lightfields throw bore-size slugs that leave a big hole(I've target shot these and there is no mistaking where you hit!!!). I have not used the core-lokt ultras but have heard good things about them.

No two guns shoot the same. Will need to try different brand/type slugs to see what it prefers.

use what it shoots best, but if it is the barrel with the rifled choke tube you wont do well at all with sabots and should use the standard foster style slugs.

I'm shooting an 11-87 SP with the cantilever rifled barrel.  I have a NIKON scope on it.  I'm shooting 2 3/4" Remington Premier Copper Solids.  These are (as advertised) all copper, so no lead for those (like me) who are mostly hunting in a no-lead area.  It's a 1 oz slug in a sabot at about 1450 fps.  I'm getting three touching shots at 50 yards.  Using my kids' H&R slug guns (20 gauge) with Bushnell scopes, I can get the same type of groups.  Hope this helps...

Try the Winchester sabots. I get one hole groups at 50 yards from my 1100, the same with the Rem. copper slugs, but the Winchesters are a buck or so a box cheaper. I have taken deer out to 125 yards with these.

vsd, check out the hard-cast & tempered full bore slugs and tri-ball loads from Dixie Slugs.   They might cost a little more than mass produced slugs, but they deliver performance like no other full bore slugs.  ALL Dixie Slugs are dry moly coated for top performance in fully rifled and smoothbore barrels.  

No other slugs are made like the Predator or Terminator slugs - hard cast one at a time and quenched in water, then heat treated for hardness so they don't lead your barrel and don't turn to mush when they impact a big animal or big bones.   ALL other full bore slugs are made of soft lead.   ALL the sabots are lightweight bullets with a plastic sleeve.

Nice advertisment, but like most it stretches the truth a bit.

ALL the sabots are lightweight bullets with a plastic sleeve.

Winchester, Remington, and Federal all make sabots with 1 oz. slugs in 12 gauge, they are not lightweights. This is the same weight as their full bore slugs, they are just Alot more aerodynamic due to smaller caliber. That 745 grain slug in the pic is going to drop like a rock.

I shoot foster slugs from Wally world.  I have a rifled choke and open sights.  I can shoot a one hole 100 yard offhand group while standing on one foot.   :shock:   Of course it consists of only one shot, and NOWHERE near where I originally aimed... :lol:

Seriously, out to 75 yards or so Bambi is in trouble.  It shoots minute of whitetail.  Good enough for me.

I am leaving for upstate New York on Saturday to bow hunt and catch the first week of shotgun.  I could not find any slugs in Valdez except PMC, 1 oz. 2 3/4" of any quanity.  So what was I to do.

New 870, rifle sights, buck barrel, 50 yards.  Took a bit to get on target but now I am shooting 1 1/2" groups 1" high and 1" left.  Good enough! 100 yards I am 5" low.

I have always been a fan for Winchester or Federal.  Guess I am switching.

Not related to 11-87 or rifled slug barrel topic, but among my shotguns is a Beretta AL 390 20 ga. with front bead sight.  I tried it out with standard Remington "slugger" ammo, and found at 25-50 yds it will group slugs within 2 inches with regularity, basically right at the point of aim.  I was a little pleasantly surprised.  Seems you fellows are all slug experts, and could tell me if this is unusual performance?

Doc TH, from what I have seen, 2 inches is a good group, but hitting right at point of aim with just a bead is a task many guns (or is it shooters?  :lol: ) have not mastered.
