Magnum charges affecting barrel life?
« on: September 13, 2004, 04:35:17 AM »
I use magnum charges 3 pellets 150grs t/7 does this type of charge affect barrel life? How does it affect it? And how many shots does it take for the barrel to become bad and need changing with regular and magnum charges? After how long will I have to change my barrel if I shoot 200 rounds of magnum charges a year?

I'd be more concerned about accuracy, how well does it shoot with that load? For no more than we normally shoot a year between hunting and load development, I don't think it would be an issue with modern magnum rated barrels. If you shoot hundreds or thousands of rounds a year, there might be cause for concern.

Accuracy is great 250 or 300 t/c shockwaves under an inch at 100 yards.

I would be more worried about wearing my shoulder out than the barrel if I was you. :)

I doubt that you will ever Wear it Out, in Your Lifetime. Improper Cleaning Methods, will Account for more Barrel Wear, than Max Charges. ML Barrels are a Lot like Fine Wine, they Get Better with Age. JMO!

why are you using 150 grs of powder?
100 grs and even less has been more then enough for deer / elk

You are doing more harm to you shoulder and I be you are starting to get quite a finch when you shoot  it.

and look at it from this angle
if you are using 3 pellets of t7 you will get 16 shots out of a box of 50( at about $1.57 a shot)  but if you use 2 you get 25 shots ( at $1.00 a shot)that is like 5 more loadings per box ( you can save $2.85)
