Barnes 300 or 350gr X bullets in 45/70
« on: September 13, 2004, 10:55:18 AM »
I saw that barnes makes both a FN and a SP X bullet in .458  the SP X bullets designed for use in bolt guns for 458 win mag and the FN X bullets for use in 45/70.   I have a Encore 24" single shot 45/70 and thought that the 300 or 350gr X SP would make a dandy moose bullet for use with the 45/70.  My only conern is that they won't expand at 45/70 velosities.  Does anyone know if the 300 or 350gr XSP will expand at working velosites of 1900-1500fps?   I would appreciate the help.

I suggest that you phone Barnes for this info. I have a T/C Contender with a 22" 45-70 barrel and have tried the 300gr HP X bullets and called Barnes for load and bullet info when I first tried their bullets in this caliber.

Firstly my load for the 300gr Barnes bullets in my T/C Contender carbine is 57gr of H322. I shoot mostly 400gr Speer's or 405gr Remington's so I can't remember the velocity of the Barnes 300gr bullets right now. Accuracy is very good but I haven't shot any animals with this load yet, so I can't comment on this myself, but with saying that I have talked to grizzly/black bear hunting guides that swear by these bullets for their Marlin 1895 45-70 Guide guns.

They responded to my email.  Said it would work fine as long as striking velosity didn't drop below 1400fps.  With a muzzle velosity of 1900fps it would expand out to 250 yards.  It should work well within the range limitations of the caliber.
