I usually just read these forums but have a question, I asked it on Savage Shooters but they don't even eknowledge you over there maybe that was a good reason for getting rid of my savage. Well my question is what year was Mod.99 s# 757xxx made. thank you dwayne.

The last listing i can find is 566xxx and that is in 1950 so just gessing i would say you 99 was made somwhere around 1954. That as close as i can get, hope this helps,good luck..........Joe.......

In 1949, Savage began stamping a tiny, lightly impressed oval on the lower, front side of the "lever boss".

The lever boss is the extension of the lower part of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates. Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter "A" together with other numbers which are apparently inspectors numbers.

On many Model 99 rifles, this oval is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and numbers inside the oval. On my own late model EG, serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the upper case letter E and the rear half of the ovals circumference (which looks like a large, faint, backwards letter "C") barely show on the lever boss. The front half of the ovals circumference and whatever is inside the oval in front of the letter E are indistinguishable.

The letters O and Q were skipped and not used due to their similar appearance.

My 308 99C says typ B on the barrel but no Cartoge,the 300 99 has a cycle with either 128 or 15 B in it.

Speaking of 99s, do any of you guys know where I can get correct screws to install my Redfield receiver sight to the tang of my 1899 .30-30? They are 8-40 threads, but the local hardware store doesn't have any of the right head diameter.

86er I bought a lever bushing screw for my Savage 99 through Numrich Gun Parts. They have about everything you can immagine. Their online site has a lot of schematics to help in finding the exact item needed. You might give them a try.

Also you might contact the sight manufacturer to obtain the item needed as I did when I lost the tiny spring in my Williams FP reciever sight. They promptly sent another free of charge.
Meanwhile you can use whatever screw you can find to fit the thread pitch and insert it into a drill . Use a file to reduce the size of the head til it fits the sight. I found a substitute for my lever bushing screw by using one half side of a chicago rivet. Screwed right in and held perfectly. It was brass though but a perfect solution until the blued screw arrived from Numrich. Good luck. POW

86er : Have you tried Redfield as they should have them or be able to steer yhou in the right direction.

Check with your local gunsmith. He should have that screw size on hand. If not you can order them from Brownells but for just a couple I'd check the GS first. If he doesn't you can send me a SASE and a buck and I'll send you a couple of 1/4" long torx head 8-40 screws. The same as I used to mount my Redfied peep on the tang of my 99.

:oops: C.A., you can't believe the excuses that I've heard from local "smiths" concerning these screws. I guess that it boils down to their not wanting to order them, or, not having a source. Too weird! I'll be sending you a dollar and a SASE, ASAP. Send me your addy. Thanks.

I PM'd you with my address. There is nothing special about these screws. I do a lot of scope swapping and got myself a torx kit from Brownells. I guess they're more a parts orderer than a gunsmith.
