Questions For All............
« on: September 15, 2004, 09:16:31 AM »
You’re bear hunting and the bear is stated to be around the 550 plus pound mark.  You know this in advance and that the range you may have to shoot could be 225 - 250 yards maximum.  No baiting, no tree stands, spot and stalk method of hunting only.  Now for the questions.  What rifle/cartridge would you take for this hunt and would your choice be different if the bear you are going to be hunting was a Inland Grizzly?  Lawdog

To me this sounds like the job for a 30-06 or 300win mag. Others will work but I like these based on what you wrote.

Yes I would use the same gun for inland griz. The size you state for this bear at 550+ lbs is in the same ball park LBS as an inland griz.

Having said all of this, if I had a 338 mag or 340 weatherby, I might, and I emphasis might, take this gun. I would have to factor in the the added weight of the bigger rifle into the overall equation since this is a spot and stalk hunt.  The 30-06 or 300mag are more than capable med size bear killers even at the range stated.

Did I pass the Test ?

Yardage
« Reply #2 on: September 15, 2004, 10:42:07 AM »
With the yardage that you have specified that leaves out a lot of rounds.  The 30/06 with 220 could work but at 200+, not me.

So that means up: .338WM & RUM, .340 Weatherby, .375 H&H, .378 Weatherby.  Anything in this catagory should do.

Bear Hunting

My choice would be a 375 H&H. I would want some thing that would hold up at that distance and have the punch to do the job right. To me there is no such thing as being over gunned. For me and the bear i think we would both be better off...........Joe..........

I myself would use my Ruger M77 7mm Remington Magnum with 175gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws...

"Energy is the ability to do work but not the only factor in a successful coup de grace."

If I was going to buy a new rifle just for the occasion, I would buy a .338 Win Mag or .375 H&H. If money permitted I would choose a Dakota Arms Model 97.

Stay Safe. Happy Hunting/Shooting.  :D

IMHO: Shoot the heaviest caliber that you shoot "well" If it's an 06 or 7rm so be it.
