Hornady .45 300gr/xtp/mag. performance?

I'm going to wyoming elk hunting.My main weapon will be a FA475,but I'm also taking my 454.
       I'll be using cast bullets in the 475 (345gr.FN),but I don"t have a proper mould for the 454.So I'll be using jacketed in the 454.
       I was just wondering if anybody has any hunting experience with this bullet. Especially on bigger game.

I've shot whitetails with this bullet over 32 grains of 296 and small rifle magnum primers in my 7.5" FA.  I'm getting about 1640 fps and it will easily group into 1.5" at 100 yards with a scope on the gun.  I've shot one deer at 110 yards with that bullet and it achieved full body length penetration.  Entered the front left brisket area and exited the right hindquarter.  Deer never moved and exit hole was about the size of my thumb.  Shot one at 65 yards also, same  performance.  Entered about 2" in front of the left hindquarter and exited through the right front shoulder.  For a jacketed bullet, it is my bullet of choice in my 454.  Give it a shot, I think you'll like it.  GS

I've used this bullet with 31 gr H110 and CCI mag primer out of my 10 inch FA .454-----chronoed at 1650. Definitely a one moa or better bullet. Corey Pantuso at FA recommends keeping this below 1600 fps ina 7.5 inch bbl to avoid forcing cone damage. So I may be on the edge for longevity, but this is still not max velocity in my gun----I backed off from 32 gr H110. Used it on one deer---to much for the deer---(240 gr xtp out of a 44 mag is a better match at least for small South Carolina deer.)  On feral hogs, a much more dense animal, it works like a charm. I'm planning to use this load for Colorado elk in fall 2005----let us all hear how it works for you. :wink:  pg

I found in my testing of bullets for the 454 Casull, Hornady 300gr XTP & Speers GoldDot GDHP shoot the best out of my SRH 454 Casull, both bullets hold up hitting solid objects. When shooting at the range bullets were passing through logs, recovered a few, jacket and lead held together, Hornady&Speers bullets expanded very well. I chose these bullets due to there great accuracy and performance these bullets produce. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

NQuintel:  my brother uses that particular bullet in a sabot for black powder hunting over a charge of 100-150 gns of pyrodex pellets and he gets awesome results.  Complete pass-throughs on whitetail out beyond 100 yds.  A very definitve bullet.  HTH.  Mikey.

I shot a doe with one of these bullets a couple of years ago with my muzzleloader (100 grains of Pyrodex). She was facing me and I aimed for the chest, but dipped her head as I pulled the trigger. Hit her in the lower jaw, splitting the bone and exiting, entering the neck and taking out the spine, then exiting the neck. Seemed like pretty good performance to me........ :grin:

One trial does not a test make.  A few years ago I had some 300 grainers loaded in my 45 Colt Trapper.  Muzzle velosity was around 1500 f/s.  Busted a 158 pound boar hog at a distance of 45 yards.  Shot was broadside and through the gristle plate.  Found the core expanded to 0.6", without jacket, under the far side skin.

After reading the replys I believe that several guys may be thnking of the wrong bullet.  There are two very different 300-grain XTP bullets, the original and the Mag version.  The latter is much tougher IME; please review your replys - thanks.

I have only used the XTP-Mag in my SRH 454. Frankly, I think the bullet is built too tough for your average whitetail. How fast can you shoot the 300gr XTP (non-mag) without damage to pistol or bullet??

I read somewhere that you shouldn't shoot the 300gr non-mag XTP's faster than 1500fps. I have been shooting them at about 1400fps out of my 7.5" SRH 454 Casull. The load I have been using for these velocities is.... 45 Colt Winchester brass, 24grs H110, Winchester large pistol primers and Hornady 300gr non-mag XTP's. I do not shoot these loads out of my Ruger Bisley Vaquero 45 Colts and do not recommend it for any gun other than the Ruger Super Redhawk.
