Combo .243 barrel
« on: September 15, 2004, 03:26:17 PM »
Hi All,

I'm thinking of picking up a Huntsman Combo with the additional .243 Win. barrel. After reading some of the previous posts on the accuracy of NEF barrels chambered to the .243 Win., I get the impression that the barrels used on the varmint rifles are rifled with a slower twist rate, than the barrels used on the deer rifles. If this is so, which barrel does the Combo come with?

Thanks,

I called H&R 2 days ago and asked them if ALL 243's had the same twist rate. According to them, all 243's have a twist rate of 1/10. I would disagree. I bought my 243 about 1 year ago. At that tine it was called a "Handi Ultra" and is stamped on the barrel "Ultra". I do not remember there being a "Ultra Hunter" and "Ultra Varmit" available ( of course I could be having senior moments :-)  ). The rifle has the lam. stock and the bull barrel. After trying to shoot 100 grain factory ammo with no success (bullets would keyhole) I checked the twist rate and it came up 1/12, thinking I screwed up, I had a friend check it. Same results. I called the factory last year and got the same answer- 1/10.
H&R offered to checkout the barrel, but the thing shoots 80 grain stuff so great I will live with the lighter ammo. It is hard to argue with success and I get 3 round groups with all rounds touching at 110 yards. If I send it back, I don't know what I will get, plus it has a great trigger pull, which might change.
I guess I got a little long winded, but I hope this helped.

Am I wrong or last year was there only the Handi and the Handi Ultra (not including the youth)?? I checked out hr1871 and you can get a 243 in 9 different configurations.  If you are going to get a Ultra Varmit, won't you be shooting lighter bullets than if you get the Ultra Hunter. Therefor if you get the Varmit you want a 1/12 twist and the hunter would be a 1/10 or am I just very confused  :-). It would be nice to see what some of the other folks have for a twist rate.

Folks,

I wouldn't be suspicious of the twist rates if the groups just opened up when trying to shoot the longer bullets. But, some are complaining that the longer bullets are "keyholeing". This screams "understablized" to me.

If not twist rates then what would be the problem ?
