Custom work on encore barrel
« on: September 15, 2004, 07:25:46 PM »
I have been thinking about getting my 24" 45/70 barrel cut down to 18" and a protective finish put on it, like french gray or something like that.  I was just wondering how much velosity loss I could expect from the 6" loss of barrel length.  It seems like a lot of people get good velosities from the shorter barrel lengths in the marlin guide guns and such.  Who does good custom work on T/C barrels.

would probably be cheaper to just pick up an 18" 45/70 barrel --   cutting and recrowning a barrel can be $$    --

stock part # is <3234>: Barrel Only; Carbine, 45/70
As politics infect the web boards - I cant list everything i have for sale on graybeards

He posted that on Classifieds right before being deactivated.

That baby is going to kick you hard. I have an 18" 450 marlin barrel that is a full 1" bull, and I don't like shooting it as a rifle because of how hard it kicks me. As a pistol its no problem, but as a rifle it hurts. I am shooting full house 405gr loads though.  KN

Thats a good price.  The local smith here wanted 75-100 dollars to cut and recrown it.  E Arther brown can do it for 40 and french gray it for another 40.  I think I'll go ahead and send it in to them to do.  I think 18" will be short enough.   I already know it will probably kick pretty hard, the Buffalo bore loads 350gr JFN @ 2150fps will open your eyes off the bench in that light encore.

I got my barrel back from EA Brown today.  It looks great.  The french gray finish is very impressive.  It looks just like the stainless reciever.  They were also spot on with thier estimated time frame, almost 3 weeks on the nose.  I have heard a few horror stories about them but they did right by me.  I would recommend them to anyone looking for custom T/C work.

I thought it was pretty darn nice too.  Apparently so did my father.  He has confiscated it, since I have a pretty nice marlin 1895 stainless guide gun he decided I don't deserve two nice 45/70s.  I guess that its not to bad a trade, 19 years of room and board for once really nice encore barrel   .   EA brown really did a sweet job and that williams peep is perfect for it.
