I am reading up on reloading as I am getting ready to take the plunge and start loading metallic cartridges. I think I have developed a reasonable understanding of the process and steps involved but wanted to clear up a question(s) I have on crimping. So here goes:

1) Would it be better to crimp or not crimp in making my first batch of 30-06 reloads at the minimum recommended charge (I'll probably be using a Lee Challenger Press)?
2) I know if too much crimp is applied, the case can buckle but is there a possibility of too much or too little crimp with respect to safety and pressure?
3) Any other info/cautions that a rookie should know about crimping?

This is my opinion and experience that says I never crimp any bottleneck case if its not necessary.
1. If the bullets don't have a cannelure then the crimp isn't going to do much....possibly deform the bullet.
2. On all the bottleneck rounds I load for the neck is sized to hold a bullet very tight and I have never felt the need.
3. If you are loading for a gun with a tube magazine you would crimp.
4. If you were hunting dangerous game it would probably very advisable to crimp......

The Lee Factory Crimp die made sizing a very easy and it is easy to adjust the amount of pressure on the crimp.

Like SKB I don't crimp for bottleneck cases. All of the rifles I have are either bolt actions or single shots and I have found no need to crimp. If however your 30/06 is an automatic then you will need to crimp.
