Small bore military hunting calibers
« on: September 18, 2004, 02:14:54 AM »
I have grown very fond of the small bore military calibers lately besides being very accurate their easy on the shoulder too.  I like the 6,5 swede but its only good for up to deer sized game and this is where the 7mm mauser excells for larger game.  The 7mm shoots and feels just like the 6,5 swede does I can't tell the difference yet it has more power. My point is if your looking for a cheaper hunting rifle and still want power and accuracy and recoil is a problem the 7mm mauser is a fine choice and its a little more affordable than a 6,5 swede masuer is too.     BigBill

I still like both the 6,5 and the 7mm its just the 7mm has the edge on power.

BigBill old Buddy:  don't go limiting yourself on the 6.5 Swede's capabilities.  That round has far more utility than just whitetail sized animals.  It is used for much larger critters than that, and very successfully, too.  I would not hesitate to use it for anything except large dangerous bear on this continent - maybe Bison, too but it is fine for Elk, Mulie, Moose and Hog, not to mention black bear and small to medium brown bears.  There is something about the length and diameter of the 6.5 bullet at 140 gns that gives it a lot more 'carry' than most people would expect.  That round hasn't been a 'darling' of the european hunting set for close to a century without good reason, and its capabilities have been proven continually in the hunting field.  Mikey.

Mikey;   I'm not too sure about blackbear hunting with the 6,5 swede some shots are 25yds and less and i'm on the ground and they have been even 10' from me too and they never seen me.  I really like the edge that the 444, '06 and the 338 gives me for large and dangerous game but I may try the 7mm out.  The 7mm is right in the lower edge with the 308 & '06.  Its not the 6,5 can't do it its what I feel safe with using I ain't built for running nor speed!!  BigBill

The Scandinavian(sp) countries use the 6.5 Swede
for animals much larger than deer!!!
