Mod 99 stock refinish question

Hi everyone

I am currently refinishing the stock of my late mod 99 (1980's-not a collector model!  :wink: ). Are any of you experienced in removing the plastic Savage crest from the below the pistol grip of the butt stock? It has the brass Indian crest in the middle but no sign as to how it was attatched. I would like to re-use it but the white spacer "melted' after extensive stripping to remove the original nasty finish despite my valiant attemps to protect it. Is this glued on or pinned somehow?
Any help or suggestions as to how to proceed would be appreciated!

I don't really know but a bit of heat if the crest is metal, will loosen it if glued in place.  Just ass a reference, how did you strip the stock?

I used Circa 1850 furniture finish remover. I've used it to refinish many projects plus two other stocks....but nothing was as tough as the tinted plastic that was on the savage. Keeping the stripper on so long and covered in plastic messed up the spacer.
Thats a good suggestion about the heat but I believe it is some type of plastic. I might try prying off the brass emblem in the middle to see if there is a screw but i dont want to bugger it up...as if it isnt already :oops:

I usually use a propane torch to remove the plastic finishes.  It curdles the polyurethane and it then scrapes off easily.  On oil and lacquer finishes a scraper is all that's needed.  I'v never used a stripper that I really thought did a great job and always had a nightmare of some of the material (usually a powerful base or caustic such as lie) soaking into the wood and creating the same situation as the Browning saltwood guns..

With that particular product I have only had to use a brush to move the stripper around and it does all the work. melts every type of glove I've tried too...but it usually works so well i endure it.
As it turns out, the small Savage crest was glued over top of the screw of the main piece so I was able to remove it.
Lesson learned.

When I got my Savage 99 the plastic butt cap was broken so I made another from aluminum. Liked it so well I constructed another for the grip cap. Looks good .Won`t rust. POW
