introduction - new to forum
« on: September 18, 2004, 02:49:50 PM »
Hi all,  :D
I thought I'd say hello as I'm newly registered and will be spending some time on this forum now.
I've been bowhunting for many years now (well over 40) and crossbow hunting for a few years. I live in Ohio where the crossbow is classed as archery and legal for about everything but migratory birds. Have a few deer kills with the crossbow behind me, but am always looking to learn how to be a better/more effective hunter. I presently use an Excalibur Exocet for my crossbow hunting and shoot GoldTip carbons. Broadhead choices are G-5 Montecs or SlickTricks.
Thanks for listening, and I hope to learn & share some of my hard-earned knowledge in the future.

:D  wabi glad you could make it WELCOME  I got that Monster Max together but man I want to tell ya it takes two to string that baby up. I have had to string it up twice and have not shot it yet   go figure.

Still have to mount the Vari Zone scope, re-string as it has streched to much all ready and then maybe, just maybe I will get a chance to fling a bolt

Migratory birds are legal here with longbow, but apparently since it's federal control the crossbow must not be recognized by the feds? Anything that is state regulated is legal with the crossbow here.
Doesn't really matter, as I'm not going to hunt ducks with a bow anyway. I have killed a mallard with a blunt out of the longbow, but that was more of a "just to be able to say I did it" case than true archery skill.
My big goal this fall will be to try to take a wild turkey with the crossbow. They sure have a defense system that will put other critters to shame. I was in my tree stand a couple of weeks ago and one walked out about 60 yards away. Spotted me instantly and was gone before I even got a good look. I think the ground blind might be my best bet for turkeys.

Gary L. - wondered how it would be to string that thing. I string mine by hand, and I'll bet it would be almost impossible that way!
Thanks for all the welcomes!

I just reread the waterfowl regs for WI it says any one with a class A disabled permit ( Which I have ) or over the age of 65 ( Persons over 65 can use a crossbow now in WI) or have a valid Crossbow permit ( persons who cannot use a bow for valid medical reasons but not classified disabled)  may with a valid archery license or small game license MAY use a crossbow to take migratory  game birds.     . I shot a couple of Canadian Honkers a few years ago with my compound  bow. Killed a couple of grouse last year with my xbow   along with 2 deer. A good start with the crossbow. ( first year using it)  Did not hunt today too windy went fishing instead but did lousy. The lake we went to was full of stunted bluegills nothing of any size. Going Hunting tomorrow evening and fishing again ( differnt body of water)    in the afternoon.    Jim
