Taurus VS Magnum Research revolvers.
« on: September 19, 2004, 10:43:36 AM »
I did decide the caliber I wanted but now I need to know witch one would be the best choice, a Magnum Research BFR or a Taurus raging bull? Im not worried about the price or the action because single or double action I still want to pull bach the hammer because its easier to pull the trigger with out pulling off the target. You might know allready that Im just starting, but I can shoot pretty good.

I have a Taurus 416SS6 that I really like. My granddaughter will sometimes use it as a change from the 657 she normally uses. I’m sure your situation is much like hers in that “her” 657 will not be transferred to her until her 21st birthday (she is 16 now) assuming we can still own handguns by then. I have never use a BFR so can’t say there.
I sure hope you have settled your indecision about what is an appropriate caliber to hunt big game with. I also hope that you haven’t gone to the other extreme of looking at a 454, 480, 475 or 45-70 in a first hunting handgun. FWIW from a handgun only hunter since 1989, it is a wonderful thing that we have so many calibers and platforms to choose from, but the truth be known, for USA big game you really don’t need more then the .44RemMag if your skills are what they are supposed to be. The best advice I can give you about handgun hunting is to view it with the eyes of a bow hunter. If you set you limits the way they set theirs you are much less likely to get in a bind.
Love those .41s'

I was trying to decide between the two myself. I ended up buying the Raging bull in the 480 it is as tight as a drum and accurate to boot. My buddy has a BFR also a fine revolver. The difference in between single and double action for me is how it distributes recoil. If we are talking big bore guns I believe most people prefer the single action it will roll back without you feeling as much of the recoil. The double action will push more and in the bigger calibers you might feel it a lot more. That being said I still went with the double action I don’t have to readjust my grip because the gun doesn’t flip up as much. The porting doesn't hurt either. I also have big hands the grip on the Raging Bull is bigger it might be more than you like in your hands. You really have to shoot both to see which one fits your hand better. They are both great guns.

I have shot both and bought the BFR. No question in my mind that the BFR is a better built gun. JMHO  :D

I own both and prefer the Raging Bull. It is very accurate and I just seem to shoot better with it than the BFR.

I prefer the Raging Bull, All of the BFR/Freedom Arms/Ruger style Big Bore handguns seem to want to jump up and twist with the recoil. The RB just pushes straight back, and that allows me to ACCURATELY fire all 5 shots in double action very quickly.... :D

I had a raging bull.  Never had any problems.  Just to darn heavy to carry.  I traded it for the BFR.

In a big bore handgun I prefer the double action design over the single, just seems easier to recover and put back on target.  I have not shot the BFR but I have owned, and shot Super Blackhawks.  I prefer the Taurus, best bang for the buck in any handgun, but especially in big bores.  The grip design, and factory porting makes the Taurus comfortable, and controlable enough to shot all day.

Not to knock the Magnum Research gun, (because I have fired one at the range and the fit, finish and feel of the gun was very nice)
but it only has a 1 year warranty on parts and labor. The Taurus has a lifetime warranty, and to date I have never seen any proof of Raging Bull failures, heard some second hand stories but no proof.. :D

Not everyone likes the Freedom Arms guns. Price does not bother me in the least. I have several guns in the over $1500 price range. I just don't need to pay $1300 to $1500 for a gun that I can get another for a little over $800 and am completely satisfied with in the BFR. Also I don't see a Freedom Arms offered in 500MAG. I think the Freedom Arms is a well made gun and very nice looking, but it just don't work for me personally. :D
