Hot damn! I cranked out 300 .44 balls in a couple of hours, using a 5lb cap. dipper pot .
I've never had but a single cavity mould before.
My son-in-laws father offered me a string of plumbers lead (that's a link of four or five 5lb ingots on a handle) in exchange for making him a bunch of balls. His father was a plumber so the lead cost him nothing, and even though I had to buy the mould, I thought it was a good deal.
Also, he lives in Maine (read- Powder Barn) and can get me black powder easier than I can.

I remember buying lead at a scrap metal yard at 12 cents a pound. Then it went up to 25 cents a pound. I bought about 300 pounds before I moved to the Rockies in Idaho as I figured scrap metal yards weren't in every town.

If they are tearing down a hospital in the area, the walls of the x-ray room are usually lined in lead. If you shoot this lead at night, you can see where you hit by the glow commin from the ball.

I used to use lead from car batteries but after I put a good shot on a deer and put it down, it came back to life and wandered off.

I made lead balls using lead pipe pulled out of an old house. I could never get the powder to burn. Water kept putting it out.
