777 Pellets in a Hawkin?
« on: September 19, 2004, 01:21:18 PM »
Can the Hodgedon 777 pellets be used in a sidelock Hawkin replica?  Will the #11 cap be enough to ignite the pellets?  2 pellets at 50 grains each x 2 = 100 grains.  Thanks!

Being relatively new at ML I might have this wrong but heres my take. There are only two rifles designed to shoot pellets, in-lines excluded, the PA Pellet by Traditions and the Firestorm by TC. I have the PA Pellet which is a flintllock. It would fire about half the time using pellets, not to reliable. Swithcing to loose powder i seldom have misfires. I have heard the same about the firestorm. Besides loose powder is so much cheaper and you can more readily tailor your loads. Loose powder is real easy to deal with as well.

no the pellets wont work in a hawken replica. stick with loose powder. real black powder works the best but if you like 777 use it but god its expensive stuff

The "snail breech" style Hawkin replica made by T/C and Lyman/Investarms has a higher success rate for reliable ignition than the Hawkin replicas made by Traditions or CVA or any of the others using a side " nipple/powder drum" style. And only if the shooter keeps the fire channel very clean and very dry.
The pellet needs the ignition source directly too the back of the pellet where the small darker true BP is added to the pellet to assist ignition. (that's why they tell ya theres a front and a back too them pellets) If the fire is coming from the side, well, most tymes it don't work so good.
Loose powder is the way to go,,with a little "knock" of your palm to be sure the "main" charge is in the fire channel.

Hope that helps,,luck too ya :D

Thank you very much Gentlemen, you have answered my question 100%.   I shall pick up a Huntsman Barrel for my NEF Handi instead of using in my replica CVA.  I inherited 2 boxes of 777 pellets.  Thanks again!

Of course, the other way is to drop 5 grains of loose powder inta the bore before the pellets.  The loose powder ignites the pellets and you save having to buy a barrel for just 25 shots of 777.

:-D  Any excuse to buy another gun, or gun related gadget.  A couple years ago an acquantance of mine closed his indoor range, and gave me a couple thousand rounds of 38 Special.  I told my wife I have to get a levergun in this chambering to burn up all this ammo.  She countered with "why don't you just sell the ammo?"  I hate it when she uses logic against.    I bought a Winchester Trapper in .357 anyways with no regrets.  Am I a gun nut?   My wife thinks so.  :-D
