How do you carry your bow?
« on: September 20, 2004, 08:43:04 AM »
This is my first bow season...it started last Wednesday. So far, no luck, but plenty of action with both Turkeys & Deer.

One thing that I found was that carrying my bow (and quiver attached) was rather cumbersome. I hunt out of a coupe of ladder stands and both natural and pop-up ground blinds. The trips there are not bad with the bow. But, once I leave those spots, I also like to stalk during late morning and early afternoon (when I have the time). Especially for the Turkey's as they are now frequenting several of the corrals during late morning/early afternoon where hedge-rows afford me cover between fields to sneak-up on them within my bow range.

I cover a lot of ground when I find an opportunity and I have to do a big loop or two to get into position for a shot.

How do y'all carry you bows when traveling between sites?

Always the same way . . . . in my hand.  I also hunt from a variety of locations and do spot and stalk.  I just have seen no better way than to hang on to either the grip or the string (by the nock). There are bow slings that you can get, but they never appealed to me.

Thx...

I found the string most comfortable but didn't know if it was bad for the bow/string, as far as the tune goes.

I've been doing it for lots of years and never had a problem.  Of course I am not ripping it thru the brush etc... either.

I bought some black 1/2 inch hollow braided poly rope and fashioned a slip loop on each end of a length of rope using a special little tool(not sure what they are called) to weave it within it's self (works like the old chinese finger lock).  This rope was approx 9 or ten feet long (before I fashioned the loops).  I played with the length until I got it right.  Now I slip the loops over each cam on my bow .... throw the rope over my shoulder like a sling and walk to the deer stand carrying my bow hands free.  I've used one for over 4 years now and it does not harm the bow or bow string and will not slip off the cams of a compound bow.   The rope is heavy enough that I can also use this bow sling as a deer drag after the kill or an ATV tow rope.  If you want anymore info about them, you can e-mail me at jimmyinc@casscomm.com  They don't cost very much to make and are simple as a hula hoop, but are more handy than you can imagine.  I even use a second one to carry my rolled up jacket hands free while walking to the treestand so that I do not work up a sweat wearing it.  It doesn't take much time to make one, now that I have alot of practice making them for myself and friends.

This year I did a moose hunt where I usually bicycled in to start hunting.  I tried the sling from my Cat Quiver and it worked excellent.  If and when the hunting got serious two snap swivels quickly assisted in the sling removal.

I am now going to continue using it. Especially walking into the bear stand when I need a shotgun just to get to the treestand alive.

Daveinthebush, funny you mentioned you needed your sling to stay alive.....  I made my orginal sling from rope back in Viet Nam to carry an M16 in the "at ready" position(putting one loop around the barrel and the other around hand grip on the butt stock) which would still leave my hands free to do other things as needed.  I still use one while deer or elk hunting and can shoot with it still on the gun, if I use a scoped gun.  It's ideal for hunting in the mountains.
