Feedback on these compact scopes?
« on: September 22, 2004, 04:29:38 AM »
I'm looking for a smaller scope to put on an Encore.  I'm not a big magnification kind of guy, but I like to go up to 4x, fixed is fine as well.  I've got a 4x40 nikon monarch (new and unopened) that I was planning on putting on the rifle.  I've got the same scope on a 209x50 and really love it, but wanted something a little smaller on this one.  Any feedback on the following scopes would be appreciated.

Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5x20

Leupold 4x33.  Is this one fully multicoated, or just a single coating?

Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x20.  I know Leupold is a little off on their magnifications.  Does anyone know the actual mag on this so I can figure the exit pupil?

Burris Compact 4x20

Thanks,
JCM

If you like the Nikon Monarch maybe consider the 2x-7x 32mm Monarch

Actual magnification=1.5x-4.5x

Since you listed the VX3 1.5x4.5 I'll mention the VX2 1x4 (1.6x4.2 actual). I bought one for my Rem. 7600 and I like it. I ordered it from The Optic Zone and they are great to deal with. The VX2 is $140 less with a wider field of view, a bit lighter, and as good of better eye relief. The VX2 scopes have the same coatings as the Vari X III scopes had. I'm sure the Nikon is a great scope too. My son has a Monarch 3x9 and he loves it. BTW, The Optic Zone has some of the best prices on Nikon products.

Thanks for the input.

I do like the Monarch's, but the size difference between the 2x7 and the 4x40 is only about a 1/2 inch in length and .4 oz, so it isn't that much smaller.  The 1.5-4.5 is 1.5 inches shorter, and 2.3 oz lighter, not to mention the objective size difference.  I'll use medium rings regardless of the objective to make it easier on reaching the hammer.

Right now I'm thinking the Monarch 1.5-4.5 or the VXIII 1.5-5, but I'm going to look into the VXII's a little more.

Thanks again for both of your inputs.

Leup VX3 1.5-5

I've had the Leup vx3 1.5-5 on my 300 win mag for 20+ years and I really like it for super durability and accuracy.  I recently corresponded with Leup and they say the newer versions have been improved but didn't say how - I'd guess better coatings and positive click adjustments.  I'd sure look at one or the 1.75x6.  Sometimes I've wished for a little brighter scope on the dark evenings - might have taken a moose this fall if I could have seen a little better.

Have a look at a Sightron SII 4x32. I have one on my Encore 7mm-08 with a 21 1/2" barrel and I think its just about perfect for this setup. Light and compact with  4.5" of eye relief, very good optically and excellent value for money. With the Encore, if you are using weaver bases, you can machine off the small overhang at the barrel of the base and this scope fits perfectly. However, if you are going to use low rings you need a hammer extension but in all other respects this scope fits an Encore like a glove, perfectly proportioned.

The Sightron SII 4x32 looks like a nice choice for a compact rifle scope. Great review here by Chuck Hawks. Looks like they sell for ~$200 on the net, Ebay has em for $204. I've been considering a compact scope for my .45-70, thanks!
