Russ,
Speaking of flinching, in our hunting club we have a kindly, aged gentleman who has a nerve problem. I don't know what he has and wouldn't ask him, but he sometimes misses and skips a little when he talks. And, you can see the shakes in his hands.

Buffalogun, I see it also sometimes, and my heart goes out to these folks.
Age can be, and quite often is, unkind...at best.
I don't consider my self an "old man", but still yet, I know it ain't in the too far distant future.  May God bless those old guys, and care for them. Keep 'em shooting, and enjoying their life as much as possible.
"But for the grace of God, go you or I".
Respectfully, Russ

Russ,

Randy is one of the old "sages" in our club. He can't do a lot of physical work, but his mind is still razor sharp. He is one of these guys who has been everywhere and done everything. He even was in on the building of the Hoover Dam, way back when. He was an over-the-road truck driver for several years and can tell one story after another.
All of our club members help him anyway we can and we don't want to lose him!

Good man Buffalogun!  Take care of the old boy. Sounds like he needs you.
Respectfully, Russ

I forgot to add that all the folks in Florida have been on my mind, and in my prayers here lately.  You folks "hang tight". That hurricane business is bad business, from what I've been seeing on TV.  Downright ugly!

BG,

I suppose my purpose is to continue hunting with a gun that has sufficient power without kicking the snot out of me every time I shoot it.  I think there can be gain with a minimum amount of pain, if I use a little logic in gun, chambering and load selection.  I am firmly convinced that it doesn't take .458 Win Mag ballistics to harvest 125 pound deer or even 300 pound hogs.

The load I shot today has the recoil of a .30-30, in the same weight gun, and almost twice the Taylor KO as a .30-30.  I suppose we will see this year, if I can keep #1 grandson quiet enough, how it performs on game animals.   :-)

Russ,

I was told that a certain government official said he was tired of these hurricanes doing so much damage to the U.S.. Said from now on...he was going to fight them over there, so we don't have to fight them here!!!

I've been doubly blessed in that the only apparent damage that I have been dealt was some downed pine trees. But, some of these folks have lost everything, as you have seen on TV. Thanks for the thoughts.

Paul,

Once you get that first deer in your sights, I think you're gonna forget all about recoil and lay that bullet right where it should go. I've taken quite a few deer with several bottlenecked cartridges and the only one that I remember dropping the deer where it stood, was the .243 Win. w/ a Speer 100g Grand Slam. However, all three deer that I have taken with the .45-70 Handi have not taken one more step. So far, I've only fired cast bullets at ani-mules.

Oh, and congrats on the grandson! I have one son(only child), so maybe a grandson is in my future. Let's see.......he can have my M70/.243 Win or M70/6.5x55 or Abolt/7-08 or M94/30-30 or M24/30-30-12ga. or.......

I like the cartridge!

BG,

The recoil in a hunting situation isn't so much of a problem.  It's all the shooting from the bench that'll kill ya!

I have one son, just like there has only been one son for four generations, but I do have two daughters.  So far, I have 8 grandchildren.  #1 grandaughter is 15 and #1 grandson is soon to be 12.

I shot some more 20.0 gr Blue Dot's today at about 1470 fps.  The group looked close to yesterday's.  I also shot a mystery load that has 45.0 gr of powder and a 400 gr bullet at 1725 fps.  The POI was basically the same for the two loads at 100 yards.

Just for grins, I loaded 12.0 gr Universal with 400 gr Rem SP, Win LR, in R-P brass  Then I loaded 12.0 gr Green Dot with the same components.  They both should be in the neighborhood of 1100 fps with a recoil of 10.3 ft/lbs.  That's roughly 2/3 the velocity of the mystery load, but less than 1/3 of the recoil.
