What would be the best raingear for hunting in Alaska?

We have had 3-5 inches of rain in Valdez this weekend.  Best rain gear here is a dry cabin and a wood stove.

The old noisy, heavy, hot stand-by for serious coastal AK rain are the Helly Hanson commercial fishing raingear.

For the last 5 yrs I've been doing ok with some Cabela's guide gear (goretex or sim) designed for sport fishing - but its noisy too and lately the nylon cuffs have been getting watersoaked and really irritating my wrists. The velcro closures are really noisy too - but pretty secure. I replaced the pants with some type of Cabela's dry teck silent camo bibs and I like them better but some times my knees still feel a bit damp, and I  wish they had belt loops so I could roll down the bib part on the warm days.  And I wish all this raingear pants with fabric linings would have mesh or something in the lower 12 inches of the pants so water that comes in under the boots while wading would quickly escape.  Hate capturing water in the lining and have it run up my legs when climbing back in the boat or up on a river bank.

After this fall I can't recommend the fishing type guide gear for hunting - too noisy - go with top line silent hunting rain gear - and I always carry my Helly's in the boat as back up.  Currently searching for the perfect coat.

Dave:  Wow I saw the weather on TV tonight you and Cordova 3-5 inches in 24 hrs.  Hope you have your place on a high spot as well as a good roof over you and your wood supply.

Dand:  I ran the bildge in the boat last night for 5 minutes.  The boat was actually tilted.  Right now it is pouring again.  The creek behind the house is tempting to overflow its banks and most rivers are near their maximun.

Better stop soon, pulling the boat on Saturday.

Thanks for the concern.

I remember those times in Sand Point and Dutch Harbor. Even the commercial fishing boats had to be careful.

We got a good dose here yesterday - rained hard all day - maybe drained a cloud or two before it headed your way.  But we really needed it.  Too bad we couldn't have gotten it in three shorter doses in the summer.  Right now our upriver villages are hurting for fuel and the barge can't get up the river.  For those guys we need a week of yesterday - but that would be a grim fix.

Hang in there - I keep remembering that somewhere I read the Natives never had a permanent settlement in the Valdez area. Wonder why?

Well keep your powder dry!
