slug barrel sight

my sight on my mossberg 500 12 gauge slug barrel broke off. i folded it and apparently there was a hairline crack because it came off in my hand.

i have a month or so to get it fixed before the season and i wanted to sight it in next week.

as far as i can tell, mossberg doesnt make this part anymore. is there a generic part i can solder or glue onto the barrel to make it work?

TruGlo makes some magnetic sites for shotguns that might work.
Williams WGOS are another possibility.

Is the original in good enough shape to replace?  There are a myriad of sights for shotguns available.  Some solder to the barrel and some clamp to a rib(or are screwed to the rib).   What type of rear sighting arrangement do you have?  The best place to see a selection of sights is the Brownells online catalog.  I'll post the link below..

its just dovetailed into the barrel. i checked brownells and they START at $25 and go way up from there. and i dont know if those would even fit the dovetail i have.

i am thinking of having it set up for a scope anyway so it may be a moot point. i would like to keep it light and handy so a sight would be best....what do you recommend? i mean, is it expensive to have a scope mount put on it? its drilled and tapped but i plan to use this for a small game gun with the other barrel so i would be taking the scope off every year and putting it back on. would that affect the zero a lot or would it just be where i left it?

I am sorry I had thought the entire sight fell off.  If there is a dovetail'd piece remaining on the barrel the sight base is intact.  A front sight for a dovetail is readily available from Brownells and they run from $10-20 dollars.  The type with a fiberoptic insert would be a good choice and they're not too expensive.

whoops....forgot to mention. its a REAR sight, not a front sight.

the barrel is a slug barrel and therefore has no rib to attach anything to.

does that clear anything up?

Did the rear sight consist of a verticle blade and a dovetailed base.  The blade part broke when folded down?  If so these are also eaily available from Brownells and run anywhere from $16 to $18 dollars.  To help we will need info as to what type sight you had..

its a mossberg 12 gauge slug barrel, i dont know how old. its NOT the williams style though.

if brownells has em for 18 bucks i will definitely get one.

There are 2 basic types of sights used on slug guns.  The Williams style which uses 2 dovetail slides to adjust for windage and elevation.  The other is made by several firms but consists of a base, which is usually brazed to the barrel.  This base contains on the top surface a female dovetail.  The sight proper is a 2 piece affair the bottom part of which consists of the male dovetail matching the female dovetail on the base affixed to the barrel.  This male dovetail is fastened to the sighting part via a hinge.  This allows the sight to be laid down out of the way when not needed.  This top part is often used on rifles as an emergency sighting device should the scope be damaged.  This part is available from Brownells... for $16-$18 dollars.

I believe the standard rear sight on a Mossberg slug barrel is a Marble or Lyman folding rear sight. Any gunshop worth it's marbles should have one, or get you one quick.  Should be $20 or less for a new one. A good shop should even have a few used ones around for less.

wow i cant believe i didnt think of that!!!

i went to the gunshop today and they said yes they had em in and the gunsmith said he would put one on for me for a total of 18 bucks, including buying the sight. what a great guy! he was really helpful.
