BLACK SQUIRRELS!! If you got one, you're good buddy. Black squirrels are considered by many trophies (almost as good as that 8-point on the wall   ). Mebe u still have the fur...if so...congrats. If not, uhh....I'll censor myself. :-D  Take care and good luck!!

Me and a friend use to frequent the Mississippi Delta around Panther Swamp. I wouldn’t say black squirrels are plentiful there but you should have a chance to kill one or two if you ever get a chance to go. Best I can tell in that area you will see 3 black squirrels for every 6 red squirrels and every 20 or so greys. The hardwood trees there are huge. It seems as though you have to shoot a country mile just to kill one. They stay in the very top.

They taste just fine to me. I cannot tell enough difference in blacks and greys when cooked in brown gravy to tell the difference. That’s the way I eat squirrels so they may tastes differently when prepared a different way.

Be Safe,
Scott

anybody ever seen one like this? years ago i shot one, was prob a 1\4 larger than a big red squirrel and was black on its belly and chest and regular color everywhere else. wherever it was posed to be the regular cream color it was black on the belly and chest. that alone wasnt what freaked me out but it was a overly huge also.

I always thought black squirrels we just a local color variation of the basic grey squirrel ... an inherited thing ... not another type of squirrel (like greys vs. reds).  Where I grew upi n Western New York, there were greys in the US; and, in Canada (a mile away, across the river), there were lots of blacks.  In my back yard in Massachusetts, there was one family of grey greys and another of blacks.  Never saw a mixed-color one anywhere.

The only thing I know about black squirrels is that in the Northeast...they're regarded as trophies (prolly because they're common place in Canada...but we don't live in Canada   ).

There is a breed of white squirrels as well but I've never seen one. I do believe there is a genitic freak sometimes of black squirrels. My family swears my dad killed a black squirrel when he was a kid. When he was a kid they hunted for food and not for sport so they had many many a day in the squirrel woods. In the area he killed that one all that had ever been seen was greys and a few reds. To my knowledge there has never been a black squirrle killed in that area. Who knows?

Something else that is odd.. There was a black whitetail deer killed in Louisian a while back.

Be Safe,
Scott

I was bicycle camping in Wisconsin this summer and was in the town of Norwalk. They have a large population of black squirrels. At the end of the street where I live (Peoria, IL) I see black squirrels quite often.

We were on vacation in Oscoda MI in 1979 and saw many black squirrels.  Nearby Olney IL has a large population of white squirrels.  My biologist sister, was taking pictures of a grey squirrel mating with a white one.

Marysville Kansas is known around here for its black squirrels. In fact, they have a picture of one on their city page.  I used to look for them in the city park when we passed through town when I was a kid.

Saw one totally black squirrel back in high school days, (mid 60's), did not get a shot at it. Recently saw two gray's with black where there should have been white. Both together, beside highway, probably licking salt left over from winter highway salting. If you've never seen one marked this way, it is VERY noticible.

That is what I have always heard. Black's are just a phasoe of the gray's and white's are albino's. Almost had a black this year....Was walking on a road going back to the car (can't shoot on public roads 'round here). Man he woulda looked cool on the wall.

There are melanistic (black) grey squirrels usually; where I live due to someone turning a bunch of them loose in town about 15 years ago. They used to make up a pretty good percentage of the population, but I think the genes are being weeded out as I see few of them now. I had always read they were just dark greys, but called the Ohio Division of Wildlife to verify it with a biologist. I have shot a few of them, and even have one mounted-now stored somewhere in the house. :-D I have not shot any in a few years, but have thought of getting a few for mounts. On a side note I shot a very dark fox squirrel a few years ago. It was black except for the normal orange color on the hair tips. Really made a neat looking squirrel. I have also shot 'blonde' fox squirrels in a nearby woodlot. They are very pale in color. I manage to get at least one every year.

I'm not sure what you guy's are talking about black squirrels. Are you talking about "Abert's" squirrels? If so, when I lived in Colorado they were a protected species. Large black and tuff's on their ears?

i will repeat part of my previous post......most black squirrels up north are the black variation of the gray squirrel.......why? no one no"s but some think it helps them stay warmer in the winter....thats why black gray sqs are common in parts of canada................now.....if you see a black squirrel west virginia down to florida you can bet 99 percent of the time it is a black fox squirrel..........especialy from nc to florida.....why?...no one knows for sure......but from nc to florida fx sqs like longleaf pine forest and lobblolly pine forest second........they do not like a lot of understory.....they like burned forest like easternc to fl was like 400 years ago....thes trees have black all over the trunks......so some bioligist think the black fx sq is using camoflage.......mack....l[/b]

There are black phases in the Gray and the Fox squirrels. The black phase of the Fox Squirrel is more common in the southern part of its range. The black phase of the Gray is more common in the northern part of its range. I have ate all color phases and all taste the same. Have any of you shot a big Black Fox Squirrel and heard one hit the ground. :o
