caliber for cas

Alot of folks use the 357/38. Its really personal prefrence I would gess. I think if you arent a handloader that its a better way to go.  Factory ammo is cheaper in 38 than 45.  I am using 45 colt and 44/40.  I like big bores so thats the way I went.
I would go to a match and look around, folks will be glad to let you look at thier stuff.  Ask questions there are no stupid ones... go have fun and be safe.

.357 is the caliber I'd recommend for anyone thinking about takin' up this game! Unless a feller is a big bore affectionado the .38s are the way to go for cost savings and to be the most competitive. The top shooters in CAS mostly use this caliber too! Yes, it's acceptable in SASS and NCOWS, even though it's not an "original" cowboy cartridge. It approximates the .38 Long Colt when loaded properly.

Hey Longknife--welcome aboard!

I agree with the last post: depends on if you're going to reload or not.  And recoil is a consideration too.  My wife is leaning towards the .38's although he can fire the .45LC without too much of a problem.
Please note the .357's are too powerful for CAS but you can always fire .38's in them.  I just put my .38 powder loads in .357 cases and they do alright in my lever action which is designed for .357's.  It's supposed to be able to also handle the .38's but sometimes jams up.  With .357's it does much better.
Another consideration is some shooters try to have the same caliber in their lever action as the pistols so they don't have problems at the loading table.  Stories of trying to load .45LC in 44-40 rifles and the reverse in pistols are common.
Just something to think about too.

Some rifles won't feed 38Special well, and need the 357 cartridge case.  Now reloading is required, to get the power level down to 38Special or 38Colt.  Do not load roundnose 38's in a tubular magazine.  A conical tapered flatnose feeds best in the rifle.

You can get cowboy 357s or load them down yourself. Most of the powder companies have cowboy loads they recommend now. I think what was meant in a previous post about it being too powerful is a factory "regular" loading for 357. You can use these cases or 38sp but like mentioned some lever guns don't like to feed the 38s. I'd get all of my guns and see which feeds in ALL of them and use that for all guns but then, I like everyhting in the same caliber. It's not a rule but it is handy. If you have 2 calibers easily confused it's better to use one. If you had say a 45 rifle, a 45 pistol and a 357 pistol you're not going to mix those up. But say you go with a 38/40, 44/40 and 45 Colt.........

Yep, you can shoot 44's in a 45 launch platform, but the groups open up a bit!!!!!     Shoot what you like, but 1 caliber is easier.   Loading strips DO help if shooting multi calibers

Old Cane, I think it will hang up as it passes the forcing cone. Seems like I've heard that, anyway. That's why I try to keep all my shot guns in one guage. and my cowboy stuff in one caliber. If anyone will srew up, it'll be me! :-D

I would like to vote for the .45 Colt. Yes, the .38/.357 is cheaper, and has less recoil, but I'm shooting for the fun of it, not for the compitition.  :D  I load pyrodex in my .45s and let 'er bang! There is just something about the bellow of a good 'ole .45 with the Holy Black in it!

Yeah, I'm headed in the 45 direction. Sold both of my 38 rifles and got another 73. Now I just need to find some revolvers when I get some more money built up.

Graybeard,

NOCoWS, National Congress of Old West Shootists. They are the second largest CAS outfit extant. NCOWS is more into Authenticity than SASS is. The "Silver Screen Cowboy" look is out wth them. Beyond that, they are pretty much like SASS.

Longknife,

Good! Now...HAVE FUN! :-D

Ya know that's one rivalry I've never heard of.  I'd bet they'd be just as happy to see a new face as the SASS groups

No problems that I know of! A lot of folks are duel enrolled (pun intended) with both outfits.

The SASS State Championships in my home state were held on the NCOWS National Championship range.

I'd say, if you have once nearby, head that way. Better dress the part though.
