Bore Butter ...............
« on: September 27, 2004, 04:07:32 AM »
NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!
I have never seen anything cause such fouling.
after about seven shots it literally looked like I had
no rifling at the bore end of my barrel !
8th ball got stuck about halfway down the barrel !
had to tap the end of the ramrod to drive the ball on down
to seat it on the powder. I know some people who swear by it,
and thats why I tried it in the first place. But as for me,
NEVER AGAIN !!!

Did you completely degrease your barrel before using?  Natural lubes and petroleum lubes don't mix at all, and the only time I've seen problems with bore butter is when someone started using bore butter patches right after he used oil lubed patches.  Get out the acetone and degrease the barrel.

I had ran a few dry patches down the bore to
dry it from the oil I use to put in the bore before putting
the gun back in the rack. But I didn't really put any effort to
really degreasing the bore. I'll make sure it is "Squeaky Clean"
and maybe give it a second chance!

Try swabbing the bore out with denatured alcohol to remove the oil before firing.

There's something else at work here...bore butter is not the problem...it's all I've ever used for almost 15 years in more than a dozen rifles...I shoot a 40 shot range trip with my flintlocks on Saturday mornings and never wipe between shots.

Clean the bore with hot soapy water down to the bare metal, include a bore brush, rinse with clean hot water, bone dry it quickly, then let the residual heat dry the barrel for a few minutes, then slather it with bore butter til the next range trip...I mean use a putty knife to put the bore butter on patches to swab the bore heavily...then use patches lubed with bore butter whenever you shoot and enjoy !

I used to use bore butter all the time.  It worked ok as a patchlube, but I never got anywhere near the thousand shots they claimed you could.  It did work good though as a grease for storing the rifle.  The main problem I had with it was that it was so darn expensive.  I knew the old timers had to have a recipe for some kind of patchlube so I started to research it.  Bear oil was the most often one that came up, but bears in this area are kinda scarce.   I had about given up when I found a reference to sweet oil (olive oil) and beeswax.  I tried it out and I've never looked back.  Works better than anything I've ever tried.  The extra benefits to it are that it is an excellent leather protector/water proofer and it works great on dry skin, ie. chapped lips, dry hands, etc.  All I do is mix 3 ounces of olive oil (liquid measurement) for every ounce (dry weight) of beeswax.  Try it out, you can make a lot of it fairly cheap.
