Anyone else carry utility knives in the field?
« on: September 27, 2004, 07:03:58 PM »
By "utility knives" I mean a tradesman's utility knife with the replaceable razor heads?  I picked up one with the "carpet" head - looked like a good gut hook to me and ended up working out alright on squirrel.

The more I spend on "hunting" knives, the more jobs I find are easier to do with these $5 knives.  Naturally they won't chop or look as cool (they actually throw alright but don't last long if you do...lol), but you really can't beat their method of staying sharp (replace the blade) and it doesn't hurt as much when you lose them.  Another thing I have to add is that some of them are built very well for wet/cold hands.*

Anyway - anyone else use these or am I alone on this?

Tim

*  This is something about some commercial "hunting" knives that drives me insane.  If you don't build them for wet/cold hands, you're setting a guy up to hurt himself.

I prefer a good ole' Case Whittlin' knife. I use the small clip point blade for skinning small game and the larger clip point for field dressing deer....has worked for me for years.

If it works for you, use it.

I carry a utility knife 24-7. I did carpenter work much of my life. I am more apt to leave the house without my pants than without the utility knife.
shot placement is everything.

Not yet, but I bought some of the hooked blades because they looked perfect for skinning a deer. The price was right too. I'll let you know how they work after deer season.

Update:
The small hooked balde in the utility knife worked perfectly for unzipping a deer. Much better than the guthook on my friend's Gerber. I will use this again.
