Barrel Twist
« on: January 21, 2003, 05:18:02 AM »
Have an opportunity to obtain Super 14 Hunter in 223 Rem for my Contender.  I understand the 223 is sensitive to barrel twist and bullet weight.  Can someone tell me what twist rate is for this barrel and what I can expect for accuracy at 100yds?

Thanks

I believe the twist will be 1:12" but it may be 1:14" instead.  With any bullet up to 55 gr., you should be OK, but anything over that will be iffy and you'll just have to try it to find out.  I've been able to get 4 out of 5 shots to go sub-MOA, but a loose trigger nut (me) keeps throwing the last one with mine.  Rumor has it that the T/C Factory .223 Rem. barrels are real picky about the loads they want to shoot.  I've only found one that seems to be real good, but I plan on going back and re-trying a few since I've done some things with the trigger and gotten better grips.

It is probably 1:12, and I can bet your house nothing over 60 grains will shoot out of it. I tried my 75gr load that I shoot in my AR 15 Match rifle. NOT! The rifle is a 1:8 and shoots sub 1". The TC 14" key-holed at 25yds, and only 3 out 5 were on the paper. I knew it wouldn't shoot but I had to try. I kept the target as a novelty. Never seen it that bad before. My 14" shot the 50-52 Seirra's extremely well with 4895 and Varget. 748 was good too. I imagine anything between the 40 and 55 area will please you. Mine was not finicky with bullet wt up to, and including the 55's.
Good luck!
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.
